  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why only 30 fps????

I am really wondering about the frame rates of the Scarlet. Everything seems to be perfect, also for smaller productions and budgets, but 30 fps max is a huge problem imho.

We´re doing lot of music videos, where it´s important to have a small but quick and good setup. Scarlet seemed to be perfect, but with 30fps we will not be able do any slowmotions. The cheapest progressive HD cams on the marked are able to do 50p/60p. Why don´t you guys want it to make possible to the Scarlet S35 or F35? I am not sure if I want to pay the quadruple price only for a higher framerate!?!?!?

The cheapest HD cams on the market don't have S35 or FF35 sensors. Those cheaper ones will have less than a 2/3" sensor. Grab the 2/3" Scarlet and you've got 120fps and far greater resolution.

No higher frame rate on S35 and FF35 models even at 3k or 2k? Why?

I know that cheap HD cams have smaller sensors, but cheap HD cams already don´t cost as much as the Scarlet will cost, but that´s ok. 7.000 USD are ok, 12.000 USD are ok - naked body! ...don´t forget.

And of course I need a big sensor. 2/3" is ugly TV style. Currently we work with an 35mm adapter which I would like to drop. But as told before, the quadruple price for just a few frames more is a problem ...

It has to do with the componets in Scarlet and heat. You can only make componets so big to process the data and heat also limits how much stuff you can fit in the camera (brain).

I don´t need 120 fps, but I need 50 or 60. A combination as follows could be a good compromise as well:

- 30 fps @ 5K
- 60 fps @ 3K
(- 120 fps @ 1,5K)

or something like that.
Am I the only one who needs more than 30 fps? How bout all the others here?

Understand that its a LOT more difficult to do higher frame rates as the resolution increases.

For example, take 1920 x 1080p (which is 2/3 of 3K and a bit smaller than 2K).

The two highest performance 1080p resolution 2/3" CCD cameras......

http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-bro...a/product-F23/

and

http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp...del=AJ-HPX3700

Limit the max available frame rate at 1080p to 30 fps.

So if we offer 30 fps too but at higher resolutions, that is a major breakthrough. (ignore the price for now but that is another major story)

But we DIDN'T stop there -

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22052

2/3" to 120 fps.... and S35 and FF35 to 60 fps in 2K and 3K windowed mode respectively.

Bottom line is - we have your use case covered...

Yes you have, i didn´t know this before. 60fps at 2k is perfect for our needs! Thank you for your reply!

From when will it be possible to place the order?

Thanks again

It will shoot 60fps at 2k. Jim has made it very clear that the frame rate limitation of the scarlet with the s35 and ff35 sensors is due to the smaller size and light weight of the body or brain not being able to maintain proper cooling at the higher frame rates, which is why the epic has a bigger body etc.

The new specs on Scarlet say FF35mm will shoot 3K @ 60fps. Can anyone on the Red team tell us how this is achieved? Cropping? And if so, how significant is the cropping?

There will be more technical details on all of the new camera brains at a later date.

For Christs sake could everyone stop complaining - you can now have a 6k camera for less than the price of a red one - accept that there will be some limitations in that deal. The sense of entitlement is staggering.

Are you suggesting that marketing has something to do with the SCARLET specifications?

This seems to offend Jim as he stated in other posts.

I am suggesting that no matter what you give people avarice and greed seem to emerge

- I now have available a 6k FF35mm camera for McDonalds paycheque money and boo hoo it doesn't do fifty frames.

I'm suggesting people be grateful for what they have.

jtm, asking about or discussing camera features is not "complaining." There is a very long tradition here of users asking for certain features, or suggesting ideas, and Jim listening.

That's a huge difference from people bitching about how Jim is offering a camera that is "too good" and "too cheap."

The limitated frame-rate of the bigger Scarlet brains are pretty much the reason why I will go for the 2\3'' with removable lenses. I mean, 30 fps are too damn low! Right now I have an EX1 and I generally use it in 720p mainly because at 1080p that too only goes up to 30! But if I have to buy a real cinema camera, I want to do some serious slo-mo!

Here's the specs on an Aaton A-Minima Super16 Mini-Cam Package for $14,869.86 which shoots at Speeds: 1 to 32fps on internal lithium batteries. 50fps on external NiMH.

So basically for a $2500 2/3 brain from red you'll be able to shoot at 120fps when with a $15,000 film camera you can only shoot 50fps. I think the Scarlet line up is a far cry from being limited even if there are limits to their capabilities.

I think with all the advances RED offers over previously available cameras we sometimes take certain features for granted. The EPIC doesn't provide just a slight full rez framerate increase over Scarlet, it offers 70FPS more! That is more then double. That means the hardware has to handle more then twice the data per second. At 2K the EPIC does more then SIX times the framerate. That sounds like a serious hardware upgrade to me.
