Brand new red ones for sale at Red store - $17,500 plus accessories. How many people are likely to purchase a Red one between now and the arrival of scarlet and epic? This will indicate whether the existing red camera will remain in the lineup.

It will remain in the line up. The news is that Scarlett is limited. Red One has less limits. Epic is unlimited. Pick your flavor. Lite, middle, or heavy weight class.

Jim is working on a chart, I think, that will explain more. People just have to get all the detailed info to make better decisions.

I'm curious if Red will purposefully cripple Scarlett to keep Red One alive. Scarlett FF35 monstro seemed pretty damned good for awhile. I wonder what it's limitations are and if it will be enough to keep Red One Mysterium X a serious contender.

If you wanted to buy an EPIC today then you can get in line buy buying a RED ONE and becoming an owner. R1 owners will get a 1st shot at EPIC (not sure about SCARLET). I am not sure how to judge all this action today but RED is delivering everything they promised and way more then anyone could ever dream up...I for one am very excited about whats on the RED horizon. RED will not intentionally cripple anything Jason, its not how they operate, if anything they will make R1 better. Lets not forget if you want to shoot a project in RED now, R1 is your best pick...the only pick! :) happy shooting.

That chart can't come soon enough :)

I also wonder about the limitation. I really hope they don't cripple their other products just to keep us R1 owners happy.

Scarlet is priced less because there is less capability. There is less capability because there is less complexity in the electronics. Less complexity and less data stream generates less heat. Hence the ability for a smaller body and cheaper price.

I would normally be offended by such a suggestion (intentional crippling) but I guess it has been done in the industry before. So I'll give you a "free pass" this time.

After such an announcement, full consideration of our flagship RED ONE customers... and no sleep, I will say that reading such posts is a bit irritating. When have we not given everything we could to our customers?

I think anyone that really thinks RED would deliberately cripple something has a fundamental misunderstanding of a big kind.

hehe Last night was pretty interesting. And funny too. I never would have thought that thousands of people around the globe would be up all night on an internet forum exchanging wildly enthusiastic comments on little pictures that the owner of a camera company was having fun releasing one by one! Haha! It was a pretty good show.

But you guys are definitely doing something different. The whole Red team is very active on a VERY busy public forum that a crapload of people are on all the time. You have to expect some of this. I mean it was the exact same thing with the announcements of Epic, Scarlet, and Red Ray at NAB this year. Don't you remember?

With so many people on this site, and now 5000 customers, you're gonna get some people who always see a downside to things. Some may have a valid concern, but there will definitely be some that are complaining for no good reason at all. All you can do is take everything with a grain of salt, and embrace this new way of doing business that you've sort of pioneered.

I'm excited about the future with these crazy ideas that you guys are coming up with.

DTTO ... So please think before you post! Thanx.

JIM...It seems there are a surge of people who are perhaps still new to RED and as of today you just gave birth to a new batch of skeptics. Its unfortunate I know...but this comes the ground breaking territory and obviously you know this already. You also knew this announcement was going to cause riots, just know they are in your favor. Best.

Everyone loves to focus on the negative. ;)
We seriously appreciate everything you guys have done.

Look - let's not lose sight of a couple of things:

- Red, Jim et al have created a production grade cinema camera, and had the good grace to sell it to all and sundry for less than 20K, US. Good luck getting your hands on something similar from another manufacturer for anywhere near that.
- They provide exemplary customer support. You have a problem. They listen.
- They continue to work at providing better products, solutions, workflows, etc.
- They have offered a legitimate upgrade path/trade-in/discount for new products. No-one is left behind.
- As far as cinema is concerned, Nov 13th was the equivalent of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Complaining now is tantamount to being sentenced to life in prison, being released after a week and grumbling that freedom wasn't as good as you remembered.
