Ohhh nooo ohhh nooo
the Scarlett is lesser expensive than the RED ONE
and its going to do more K and it has a newer sensor how could RED do such a thing omg!!!!

Ohhh no my camera is obsolete =(-------

you guys are making me sick as F^%$

Stop your crying and B@%#^#$

These are announcements these are specs that are subject to change, these are cameras that are not out yet, not made yet, not available to public yet ,and wont be for possibly close to a year or even longer.

GIVE ME A BREAK stop your sorry posts.

Have you purchased a computer and it was faster, cheaper, smaller a year later?
The answer is YES not maybe YES the answer is YES yes yes yes.

Every year a new laptop comes out, and every 2 years you can count on faster computers for sure.
You buy it dont you???
Or do you say OMG!!!! my computer is obsolete and post on forums to complain unnecessary complaints.
Just because apple does not announce what they will release in a year or 2 does not mean they are not making a better computer tower or laptop.

Cameras come out and guess what???
the same company releases a camera a year or 2 later, faster, better, stronger, cheaper ect.

This is nothing new.

RED is taking in trade ins I have never even heard of that EVER. full money value.

and your able to upgrade your sensor in the RED ONE in the future.

Damn give us all a break.
Its like a year away.
Wonderful news yes we all love it we all look forward to it.
Now quit crying.

I agree.

Aren't you crying and whining about all the crying and whining? :)

They have good points. Your above points don't address them. If the scarlet didn't have an interchangeable lens AND an S35 sensor AND Epic didn't cost tens of thousands more for us poor folk, etc. etc. etc.... then maybe there would be less tears.

I doubt the posts will stop. Might be helpful to stop reading them 'cause we don't want you getting sick and all...

:)

  (well said.. twice) ehehehehehe

edit
98% with you.. about the other 2% i just don't think that an interchangeable lens AND a S35 sensor are a bad idea for scarlet..

Buyers were most likely expecting a different resale lifespan for their investment. The new announcement doesn't diminish the function of the current product, just the resale value. I can see how that stings a bit.

It doesn't change what you can do with the camera. Shouldn't the real value of a product be determined by what you can do with it? Red still delivers just like it did yesterday. Isn't that why you purchased it in the first place? To make films? Isn't it the content that drives the process?

Now, digital cinema cameras will follow upgrade cycles closer to computers since thats essentially what they are. The things that allowed this technology to come to market at this price point are also changing how long it's holding its value. How many times have we purchased a computer to discover the most useful component after 6 years is the power cord? Electronics simply have a shorter life than mechanical devices.

Make your equipment choices based on the content you need to create now. There will always be something better around the corner.

I don't think you were really reading what the Red One owners points were. It wasn't about resale value.

Let me get this right...
I get 12.5% off of Scarlet S35 which is $6160 and I get to keep my Red One.

So for $6160, I get to upgrade to a 5k camera, better redcode, smaller, lighter, and with a good solid upgrade path. Plus, I get to keep my RED ONE.

What the frick are you guys complaining about? That's less than a the tripod and head I bought!!!!

Glad you're rich.

Anyway, this just posted by Jim:

The "electronic engines" are different between each of these camera models. That means there are format capability differences. For example, the RED ONE has 4K, 3K, 2K, 1080P (soon) and anamorphic format options. It does ramping, time-lapse, has 4 channel 24-bit audio, etc. Scarlet will NOT have the full flexibility of a RED ONE. EPIC has more capability and flexibility than the other two. It is one of the reasons that the Scarlet body is smaller than an EPIC.

Just so you can figure that into your planning.

Scarlet will have limited format options.

RED ONE has many format options.

EPIC has virtually unlimited format options.

The thing is, you can always sell your used RED One camera to someone who wants to purchase an Epic. Knock a few grand off, and both sides win.

Or you can keep your Red One and continue churning out awesome footage.

There are many options, and whining doesn't need to be one.

Seriously, this is a great day (and I say this as someone who has only just received a Red One, and with not a lot of spare cash and hands right now.)

So my Red One is superior to a 6K camera with a full-frame sensor...how?

It has more frame rates? Oh.

I don't own a Red One, but I get where the disgruntled owners are coming from.

If you buy a Mac today, you can't complain when a better one is available in a year.

But Steve Jobs doesn't promise he's made "obsolescence obsolete."

The complaint is not that technology is developing (as it always does) but that Red One owners believed Red would never come out with a cheaper camera that made theirs look small. And it just happened.

If you had sunk five figures into a Red One package what happened today might feel like a punch in the gut to you, too.

MadamImAdam,

although you don't post much... you really should read more posts.

Scarlett doesn't replace RedOne. A lot of Red Owners felt that today, but Jim made it clear that Scarlett has limitations due to the smaller body, etc.

Jim is preparing a chart over the next few days. I imagine further details will help the clarify the situation more.

The Red One camera is still in play... going strong.

I think before everyone gets their panties all ruffled up, we need to see what upgrades will be offered for the RED One. As it stands right now, the RED One is still a very good value and will be the only camera option from RED for several more months. We have already been told that it will be given sensor upgrades and other upgrades to keep it current. They are not abandoning the RED One.

I don't know why anyone would feel as if they were punched in the gut with this announcement. A RED One package should provide a complete ROI by the time these new cameras ship. The RED One body will be worth $17.5K as a trade-in toward EPIC, so that's a big advantage right there. People wishing to downgrade from Scarlet shouldn't feel cheated. They can sell their R1 body for $15K or so and buy Scarlet with those funds. Or keep the R1 and get the 12% discount on that new Scarlet.

I'm trying to be objective and look at it from various points of view, but I seriously can't see any reason why people would be upset and whining about their RED One being obsolete.

No disrespect intended, but I have noticed how the RED owners that embraced the original camera and ran with it and ACTUALLY started using it for what they had been dreaming they would with it if such a camera ever existed are not complaining. I'm talking about the Offhollywoods, the Gibbys, etc and a whole bunch of others that have already put their cameras to good use. Not only have they recovered some or all of their original investment but they have achieved those creative dreams that the prohibitive costs of film or CineAltas would not allow them to do. Are their cameras obsolete? So long as they continue putting them to good use, I suspect we won't get too many complaints from those red users. Which makes me wonder what it is exactly the other group of users that have been complaining before and after today's announcements have been doing with their cameras? or their time?

Exactly,
It's hard to have perspective when you visit this site
all day and think everyone in the world knows what RED is.

They don't - In Dallas - far removed from either coast,
most producers DO NOT have a clue what RED is.
We have some shooters in town with packages
and a rental house with a few RED's but overall
the RED impact has not hit us yet.
Maybe it is different in LA & NY, but are all the
producers going to scoff at a RED package because they
know about Scarlet? Of course NOT!
If you own a RED you should be doing triple cartwheels
with the announcements today. It insures a bright future
for RED as a company and a solid future of support & service.
Now you can look at it like this. Buy a Scarlet and now you
have your back-up body. And the opportunity of buying used RED's
really opens up. The glass is half-full, I can't wait until it gets filled up!

The complaint is not that technology is developing (as it always does) but that Red One owners believed Red would never come out with a cheaper camera that made theirs look small. And it just happened.

I think you are missing the forest for the trees. RED has always said they would release sensor upgrades for the R1. They never claimed these updates would be cheap or free however. The sensor is the most important part of the $17,500 body so you can bet the R1 sensor upgrade would cost a good percentage of that. When your fellow RED owners upgrade their R1s to the new sensor for ~$10k will you still feel your original is obsolete?

What RED has done is offer another option. You can trade in your R1, pay $10k and have a 5k EPIC. Or you can keep your R1 and use your 12% credit and buy a 5k Scarlet for $6,160 and have TWO cameras. It looks like most of your RED accessories will work with Scarlet and EPIC so those have not become obsolete at all. Unless you were expecting an R1 sensor upgrade for a couple grand both of these options are a WAY better deal.

I think many Red One buyers interpreted "obsolescence obsolete" to mean "Red will not issue a cheaper camera with better specs." So when Red One announces a 6K full-frame camera for less than Red One, it kinda contradicts this expectation.

Personally? I think these Red One buyers should not have had that impression. It would mean Red wouldn't be able to remain competitive as everyone marched at the speed of technology. It was an unrealistic expectation.

But they did have this impression, and I do understand what led them to get it.

And if that were me, it would hurt. And that's why I'm not mocking these people.
