  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Maybe this has been cleared up already, but there's a conflict on the spec sheets.

Is the S35 sensor 30x15mm or 30x24mm?

BTW, red team, today has been amazing. I absolutely love the decisions you guys made. Truly revolutionary.
I'm very excited to be a Scarlet brain owner and then rent an Epic brain for the shots when I need it.

Please note that a Super-35 frame as defined by SMPTE standards is 24mm across. Also note that while the RED One is labeled with a S35 sensor it in fact only has an active image capture area (as opposed to the look around area) of just over 22mm, or what is the SMPTE standard for Academy aperture. So the new sensor may be labeled as 30x15 but it won't necessarily use all the area, at least not if anyone ever plans to shoot with a regular Super35 lens!

From what I understand, about 10% of every sensor, horizontally and vertically, isn't used for image capture. I don't know if 30x15 is the capturable area or the entire sensor size. My guess is it's the capture area.

The red has a Super 35 sized active image capture area, it just can't be utilized because of the bandwidth constraints on pumping 4.5K through the internal processor. Originally, the full, S35 4.5K was supposed to be captured through an optical port, but because of economic limitations due to a lack of interest the optical port was scrapped.
The Super 35 frame of the RED One that has yet to be utilized.
