  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Could someone with some knowledge in this area please give me some more information if it's a step further to 3d like they mention on the Red sheet...

From the pictures and measures it's clear you could use the new coming miniprimes on 2/3 and get stereo with each eyes close buy, but is this the same and as close as you can get them on a mirror rig??
Would we eventually be able to put some s35 glass on it without moving them away to much and still have the same effect one does that use a mirror rig when shooting objects close by.

I'm not to familiar and understanding right now about the ff35, because I'm a little surprised they only talk about zoom lenses right now , but would this be a better fitting in terms of comunication of 2 camera systems and maby the electronics of the lense without the need of external motors operating them in pairs...

From my point of view , this system is somewhat copied from the si-2k id without the hassle of being in the need of wiring a laptop to it for recording.

Also, i know some units are ready to release which measure camera alligments and predict which problems may occur in post, but would they really be needed if you use camera in pairs with this kind of next to eachother setup....

Any info appreciated...

On a mirror rig you can get them as close as zero if you want to. And sophisticated mirror rigs also provide interocular variation during shooting as well as change of convergence ("squinting" angle).
And you'll be limited to very compact lenses, so in this configuration it's mostly suitable for the 2/3" Scarlet and the MiniPrimes. Still a great basic 3D rig for a few K $!

But I'm sure it won't take long until we see the first advanced DSMC mirror rig components, maybe even from RED themselves. The modular system makes it perfect for this!

Look at the P+S rig with semi-pro cameras. A huge machinery.

Now imagine a streamlined one with two 65mm EPICs. There's your IMAX 3D camera for the price of a studio TV camera, and a size and weight you could probably still mount it on a steady cam arm. Ridiculous, isn't it?

This is in fact what I am most excited about from this announcement! Building a 3D rig that is compact like this in any configuration, large Epic style, or smaller 2/3 Scarlet style make this a really amazing breakthrough. Granted, you probably won't have as much control with the image convergence etc on the fly, but think of all the applications that a rig like this would fit into.

This is exciting for me, and i can't wait to build my own.

So how cheap did shooting Multi-Cam/System 3D just get? LOL

hmmm. so i wonder if this particular base plate of sorts allows for some kind of slider movement to adjust IOD? I'm curious how you would control focus properly especially manually? I could see a really cool app that works over WiFi or USB that allows you to control certain aspects over a laptop. Seems that would be very "RED" thinking to me.
