  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC FF35 in 5k mode for using PL Mount lens ?

The lens mounts are interchangeable.
It says so under the lens mounts item.

Now how much rez a pl will cover on the monstro is another question.

Now I can just see a "blindfolded epic assembly contest" like in the military.

This is my EPIC.

There are many like it, but this one is MINE.

My EPIC is my best friend. It is my life.

I must master it as I must master my life.

As far as FF35/Monstro making PL glass obsolete: this is a really silly statement. STILL GLASS IS NOT MADE FOR FILMMAKING. Proper Markings, Mechanics, etc. PL Mount glass isn't going anywhere.

And to add to this. Less depth of field isn't always desirable. As David Mullen, a very experienced cinematographer, has said numerous times, they are often fighting to try and get more depth of field. Especially the focus pullers. Plus it isn't exactly desirable to have just the nose or eyes in focus for aesthetic reasons too.

PL glass isn't gonna go away. We're just getting more options to use. And That's what Red's all about. Options.

What I really want to know is...

What I really want to know is...

The new lens mounts look to have no back focus adjustment. Does this mean that these mounts are perfectly machined? Maybe a little shimming but rock solid this is proper focal depth.

Please god let this be so.

i am concerned about no PL mount above 5K. there are professional work flows for 2/3" lenses and PL mount lenses. i see the 9k to be like 65mm and the 28k to possibly be like imax, i see them as sfx and specialist cameras. but am not sure about 6k FF35. the lenses seem to be AF stills lenses. i know people have been shooting red footage with stills lenses, but it seems that the more expensive higher resolution camera will be using cheaper and less proven glass.
i'm concerned that there is now too much choice its all gonna get confusing.

There is no reason why you couldn't use PL lenses on the FF35 Epic! Just stick on the Interchangeable PL Mount and crop the sensor to 4 or 5k. And you'll probably get higher frame rates at those resolutions too.

And you can also stick on all your great Canon L glass onto it and have a full frame 24MP still camera. You can also bear with still lens limitations like many people are, and use it for 6K video too!

More options are better. It's not that difficult to figure out what you need if you're a cinematographer, and do your research.

Why is this even a question? Of course it'll have Windowed modes. They're just listing the Max Resolution and FPS at that resolution.

I hope you're right about it having windowed modes as per the R1. I would love if someone from red would confirm that.

You would also have to explain that the FF epic ('if' you can get a PL mount on there) would deliver 'less' spatial resolution in that mode than the S35 epic. This would be confusing at the moment.

It would however shut up ;-) all the Anamorphic lovers as they could squeeze every last bit of their imaging circles onto silicon! (Wierdcrew??)

YEEESSS!!!!:sorcerer:

I'm perfectly fine using a FF35 sensor brain with a PL mount and 35mm lens, shooting only the cropped, Super 35 portion of the sensor.
This means I'll be getting ~4,148 pixels horizontally (24.89mm) and ~3143 pixels vertically (18.66mm).

So it's cropped from the entire sensor size, BUT:
-I'm shooting full Super 35 size
-I get slightly more resolution than the RED one
-I get 2+ more stops latitude than the RED one
-Higher bit rate, bit depth, lower noise than RED one
-I can shoot true Anamorphic, if needed

I don't really see what all the debate/confusion is about this...

um... I still hope you're right... but jim said this:

"The "electronic engines" are different between each of these camera models. That means there are format capability differences. For example, the RED ONE has 4K, 3K, 2K, 1080P (soon) and anamorphic format options. It does ramping, time-lapse, has 4 channel 24-bit audio, etc. Scarlet will NOT have the full flexibility of a RED ONE. EPIC has more capability and flexibility than the other two. It is one of the reasons that the Scarlet body is smaller than an EPIC.

Just so you can figure that into your planning.

Scarlet will have limited format options."

Pull it on and off a few times and it won't be perfect anymore. Don't know what system they plan, but that mount has to be adjustable.
