First, I am VERY excited about all of this :-)

Second, what are people's thoughts on pricing for the I/O Port, Battery and Controller (hand and wireless) modules? I can't tell if Scarlet and Epic are slightly more expensive or a LOT more expensive (maybe slightly cheaper?).

In theory, the handle controller should be no more than $1000, it should just be a 'dumb' controller with buttons and a LCD, no computation or smarts of any kind.

In continued theory, the I/O should be somewhere around $1500, as it should be nothing but a glorified 'breakout' box. Hopefully those can be ganged together (get one if you want two ports of audio, get three if you want six ports of audio).

In advanced theory, the battery module should cost $1000 flat, as it too should basically just be a battery plate with housing around it.

It seems to me that you *HAVE* to have an I/O module and controller module to be able to run Scarlet or Epic. Otherwise, I see of no other way to control the camera or get access to any ports. We're definitely no where near '3k for $3k', probably $7k for a bare usable Scarlet, but the cool tradeooff is the infinite upgradeability. Hopefully they'll quickly publish specs for what their ports are so that other vendors can make controllers, I/O modules, etc. and we'll have a large Red industry :-)

And it would be nice to see some 'Suggested Packages' for both Scarlet and Epic, and a breakdown of what they cost. As of now, I don't know if Epic is a $35k system (without lens) or a $55k system (without lens).

Shawn, the announcement closet to the original scarlet is 2/3" fixed lens brain which does not have a price affixed to it yet. I suspect they will have something 'close' to the original Scarlet with that model.

Shawn here's a way to figure the cost of the modules:

Jim said that the Epic 5K would be in the 40s.. I think it still is. You should assume about $17,000 in accessories to get it up to speed. 28 for body, and 17 for wireless panel, IO board, etc.

My guess, but a good one

Can't be. The Scarlet brain without lens is $2500, so with lens you have to figure is $3500. That doesn't include a LCD, battery, ports, etc. You still need the Grip controller, I/O module, battery module, etc.

I think a comparable configuration that does what the old Scarlet was going to do (fixed lens and all) is probably now $7k+. It's better, but more than twice the price.

I wish the 2/3" Scarlet took DSLR lenses.

It looks like you can make a small package:
- battery in the handgrip
- CF card on the operator side.
- single link HD-SDI built in on the lower rear of the brain.

Doesn't seem to support audio without the IO module though.

scarlet won't be able to do lower resolutions and higher frame rates in any of the modules. thats kind of a bummer. you could end up spending as much as the red one and lose some functionality. it would be nice if it could at least do 48 or 60fps, the ability to overcrank is important for narrative work. I think red did an amazing job with the options. there are still compromises, if you want 35mm and the ability to over crank at lower resolutions red one may still be the best option.
