  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thankyou thankyou thankyou

yeah that Is a biggie! i was wondering how the pulled it off! the Red team seriously never ceases to amaze me.

I remember they said it was borderline impossible. Then they just snuck it in there..

So is that how it works?

I want 500fps
I want 500fps
I want 500fps
I want 500fps
I want 500fps
I want 500fps
I want 500fps

That's a bandwidth issue. Never gonna happen.

Getting 1:1 apparently was a software optimizing/profiling issue.

Firmware will gain features as the guys coding figure out how to squeeze more work out of the available processor cycles they have. Eventually though, they will hit a wall even with that.

1:1 is great!

NOW... we need the ability to use two RED LCDs at the same time. I'm sure it is very achievable and I wonder why it didn't happen already, since a lot of people requested it.

I've never really researched how the phantom or viper cameras incorporate this technology but I wouldn't option this out just yet. I'll take anything higher than 120fps.

Just to make it clear, I'm hoping this will be a feature with the Epic and not the R1.

i think the viper is recording over fiber.. so more bandwidth... essentially it might be possible if you're ever able to record raw optically from the RED.. i know it was planned once long ago to have something like that..

yes kaplin, I wonder too..

Beginner question cause I have no clue! What's 1:1 mean? Something to do with sensor responsiveness and lenses? Or something to do with viewfinder responsiveness? Just some guesses. Please enlighten a beginner ;-)

what is 1:1 ? Read something about it in build 17 specs... Not quite clear to me.. any clue from the big guys here ??

1:1 is 1 to 1, meaning that on your display you are seeing 1 pixel being represented from the sensor on 1 pixel of the display. Since the viewing paths aren't 4k, this 1:1 is like zooming in on the 4k image to just see part of the image, for focus.

It's a 1:1 zoom feature, allowing you to get a look at what the final image will look like.

Phantom and others are so much faster because they are uncompressed and in the case of phantom because they are writing totally unprocessed raw (not even black balanced) to RAM inside the camera. They fill that buffer prior to transferring it to another slower medium.

You see 1:1 from preview size at 1280x720...EVF, HD-SDI or HDMI and not from the original 4K+(tomorrow Epic).

1:1 - Awesome!

Was the issue with higher frame rates at 4k a bandwidth issue there, too? If there were higher 4k frame rates some (some) might feel better about not needing the EPIC as much or not being able to afford it.

Happy regardless :)

GREAT 1:1!
I am very very happy that you made it.
It makes things much easier and faster in countless situations.
Focus will be almost immediate without the needing to pull someone with a tape between camera and any subject all the f###### times, plus the problem of having all the lenses always perfectly collimated, before any shoot, on the field if necessary.
Now, wasn't it simply easier and cleaver and quicker this way with 1:1?
Thank you very much again Red Team... and bad luck to the snobs who hate the idea of the others having an easier life.

1:1 native image sensor magnify is a new feature on Build 17 which portrays a 1280x720 center crop portion of the sensor data in a 1:1 ratio in the EVF, or out the preview (1064x600 on the RED LCD). This is a tremendous help in sight focusing the camera, setting back focus, etc. Previous to this the camera featured 2:1 image magnification, which enabled sight focusing, but nowhere to the ease that 1:1 magnification does. Whether your workflow involves traditional focusing or sight focusing, 1:1 is an improvement.

Image magnification is enabled by a button on the left (dumb) side of the camera, or alternately by pushing a button on the side of the electronic viewfinder (EVF).

I've simplified this explanation since you mention you are a beginner. Everyone here was a beginner at some point, so there is certainly no shame in asking questions. Hope this helps...
