Dear All!

I been had a film test with the RED ONE Camera last week,
then I found some problems, looking to get some comments from those Dop or Red User who are more experienced on this camera.

1, I found it's a bit distortion, it that NORMAL?
2, Shot with plan then I can found that the straight subject NOT STRAIGHT
3, Motion BLUR

Thanks a lot and Cheers

1. Distortion or noise?
There will be lowlight noise. More so if you don't develop your files properly
2. Sounds odd...
3. There will be motion blur, depending on your shutter settings...
Sure your lens was ok?

What kind of optics did you use?
What was your cam settings?
Do you have some stills to look at?

It is not good etiquette to post the same message three times.

Would be great if you could be more specific.

Distortion should be due to the lens used.

Don´t understand question number two. Are you talking about wide angle shots of buildings? In that case it is totally normal to not get straight lines. Use a bellow lens.

Motion blur you will get in any camera, it is a function of exposure time. Without motion blur, the moving images would look unsmooth. Only way around that is to shoot at 60 or 100 frames a second, and project at that frame rate as well.

1 - this would be a lens issue more than a camera issue
2 - Don't know what this means, presumably another note about distortion, which is again a factor of your lenses
3 - That's to be expected in a motion picture camera. If you don't like it, you can change the shutter speed to taste, but a 180-degree shutter is standard

Re question 2. Do you mean "shot with a PAN"? Do you mean you did fast pan and the vertical lines became not so vertical?

Hi Gunleik and Martin!

I Apologize for post 3 same post in different forum, Ideally I just looking to get the advice from different experienced RED USER, I don't think it's against the rule right?
As a experience film Dop, I know how to handle for the Film Camera, but for Digital Film camera I am still new. So, I believe to create a great image is not only from apart of lens or camera body itself, it's from few different professional gear then create it, and I just trying to share apart of not my skill questions, I don't think as experience user would mind that, am I correct or not, please let me know.

1. Ultra Prime 85MM with T.Stop 2.4, shot with shutter angle 180 & 25FPS, just tulip down from a Straight Line, I can saw the clearly Distortion.

2. Same lens and stop, when I planning from a straight subject to another straight subject I can see clearly right on the mid part were not straight

Sorry for my poor English, hope you guys understand what I try to said.

All the best

Hi Rayon!

Really appreciate for your great explaining, I made the test with below imformations

Apologize for post same questions in different forum, please forgive me, and Sorry for my poor English, hope you guys understand what I try to said.

All the best

Hi,

Sounds like the cmos rolling shutter, movement does bother some people as it's not the same as a film camera.

Hi Perry,

1. Not sure what you mean by "distortion" - do you mean it's stretched or squashed? I think you'll have to post some footage to demonstrate what you mean. Is the footage distorted when you watch it back on camera (through the EVF or Red LCD) or is it distorted when you view it on computer (are you viewing it in RedCine? What's your workflow?)

2. I think you mean "panning" instead of "planning" - if you do a fast pan you may notice some skew (vertical lines bend). This has been greatly reduced - it used to be much worse and quite frankly unacceptable but the problem has been greatly improved by a firmware update (Build 13 or 14 I think). The skew is caused by the nature of Red's rolling shutter and other cameras can suffer the same problem (if you think it's bad on the Red have a look at the skew on the Nikon D90 :whistling:).

Hi Stephen!

Thanks so much for your comment!

Cheers

Hi David!

Thanks so much for your comments, correcting my poor English and great explaining.
I was use one of the DOP's own Camera, and didn't keep the footage, the "distortion" I mean is the vertical lines blend, and it happened to both of panning and tulip.

Cheers

All the best.

Hi Perry, i think you refer to CMOS rolling shutter. It's about clock speed of the sensor, yes if you do a very fast pan, you will experience skewed image. One of things that u need to know about pitfall in CMOS sensor.

And maybe you are refering to "tilt" instead of "tulip" :). It's there but it's not very noticable. And maybe you are also refering to vertical lines "bending" instead of "blending", but to be more accurate it's skewed instead of bending, i will send back the camera if i were you, cant imagine what bending footage looks like.

Hi Rivai!

Appreciate for your message and great comment.
looking to learn more technical things from all of you guys.

Cheers & all the best

Perry,

Please do not post the same question / thread in multiple places on the forum! I consolidated all the useful posts into this one thread and have moved it into the appropriate section.
