Hey Guys, i'm looking to get a new stills camera in the next few weeks, its going to be between the 5D (prob mkII) and the Nikon D700 (my price range) . . . . now i'm fortunate enough to have used both of these cameras but still undecided . . . . but I am leaning towards the Nikon so i can use my Red's lenses even though i have been a Canon man all my life. My Canon lens is a bit rubbish to be honest but has served me well.

Just looking for others input on this choice.

Andrew

"My Canon lens"? Doesn't sound like the switch is going to cost you much in the way of money invested in Canon optics. You could probably go pick up a D700 from a store right away, that's a plus. With the Canon.. I just hope it arrives this year. I ordered mine on sep 17th.

Thanks. Yeah shouldn't cost me too much to change over. I shopped a couple of lenses for this one better zoom that covers the range that i have now. I have a few sigmas but dont really count them :calm: ive got a 500mm monster lens so . . . . that would have to go on ebay.

Canon are pretty good at delivering numbers, im guessing it would depend on how many the shop where you ordered it would be allocated. I do have a working relationship with Canon (which makes this a little bit of an interesting and a risky change for me) Had a play with MkII a month ago it looked great and the shots were amazing, but it was a pre-production model & it broke before the day was out . . . . doh!

Andrew.

Talked to canon rep and according to him if you aint pre ordered it may be March before you can get hold of one..

If your not fussed about you canon lenses then the Nikon seems a better option to use the lenses on ya Red.

Personally a Canon person but each to their own ;)

I remember last time, I bought the 5D the first week of december (2005). By then I could just pick it up from a store. I suppose now the 5D is more known and popular, so initial demand might be higher.

I'm waiting for the 5Dm2. All that resolution + high ISO (and the combination of high ISO with massive downsampling) are major factors. Not to mention 1080p video!

I would wait until the RED Roadmap announcement on Nov 13th. It has been made very clear that it will be massive. Considering the hints of a DSMC earlier the announcement might include info about that. Even better Scarlet might have some sort of still functionality.

The pic on this thread: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21163 kinda hints at something very handheld (with still function?). The configuration is very much like a Still camera.

It is also possible that RED may step in and settle the Canon mount issue. I really don't have evidence of that. There have been hopeful musings on other threads. So it might be more my wish than reality. However, with no clear Canon mount solution in sight (put several potentials). It seems to me they might just surprise us.

For myself I'm waiting to upgrade my 5D to a Mark II until after Nov 13th.

Of course you are correct. It seems unlikely that the 5Dm2 will become available before Nov 13th, so we really don't even have a choice.

True i may well wait anyways till after Nov13th - i have no real spare money not after paying 30k on my Red One -- lol.

But i have a few photoshoots coming up and i am in need of one which is why im looking for one at the moment . . . . all burlesque gigs :innocent: :usd: :usd: :innocent: as well so . . . .

Andrew.

Use your R1 for the shoot -- S35 sensor = APS-C (roughly), and 12mpix...

fde101, its certainly an idea, one shoot i can and am planning to film anyways so could do . . . . but the one i have on Tuesday i cant really its not a option. A lot of post work that way, creating stills from the video & i need a quick turn around . . . . . trying to borrow my mates 5D for it, i have my 400D as back up but i want something a little better if i can.

Right. I guess what I meant is more deciding where to put my money in the near future; trying to come up with my strategy (like many here).

I do think though that a 5D is not a good purchase right now either way with so many potentials on the near horizon.

Yeah, trying to plan out things is going to be tough, because, for example, we don't know what Jim's DSLR-Killer will take in terms of lenses, and we don't even have the foggiest idea when it will be out.

In terms of other DSLR video cameras coming out, perhaps Nikon will do something, but other than that, it might be another half a year or more before anything else really comes along to replace the 5DII. On the Canon side, there have been rumors about the 500D and 1Ds Mark IV shooting video. And one seriously wild rumor about a Canon DSLR that could shoot with an electronic shutter/mirror.

much as I love my red, the still frames really don't compair to what I can pull out of a D3, or D700 (which uses the same chip). One day though....one day...

So i've made a decision, thanks to everyone for their input. I would wait for the Canon but i cant really . . . . . so i'm getting the Nikon D700 tomorrow, i have a photoshoot coming up next week that i need something better than i have for. Its a burlesque shoot and in a great location i want to get the best out of and quite dark so my 50mm 1.4 Nikkor lens will come in handy.

If anyone is on Model Mayhem you find me under Andi Martin in the UK and you can see some of my work (its only a small part of what i have but most i cant show due to restrictions where i can post) (PM me for my MM tog number im not posting that here. Most shots done on the 400D a 1DS MKI (old skool) and D700 (which i borrowed for the shoot)

I will go for Canon 5D M2, I been waiting for long times already...
Got the whole range of L T1.8 Lenses from 16-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm,
also Toknia 11-16mm T2.8 Pro
they made me can't swap to other brand...

Hi Tom!

Well! the 5D M2 will be sell on the market end of this month,
I know a friend is working in the Canon Group, might get it earlier.

I Also know some friends working in the camera shops too, usually I can get the good discount from them, so, if you looking to buy one, I can check the best $ for you.

Cheers
