I am going to be shooting it all at 4K, then outputting to a 1080P for burning and projection.

But it's going to be a short-film, i'm aiming at under 15 minutes, so I am planning for about 30-40 minutes (tops) of shoots and reshoots, at 4K how much space will the footage take up?

I have about 500GB of space free on my HDD's and wanted to know if that is enough for about half an hour or so of footage? (Ideally I am aiming to keep the shooting ratio at a minimum, so I want to keep it down to 20-25 minutes of raw footage, but I want to be prepared for shooting way to much, because i'd rather have way to much space set aside for it, than not enough.)

Oh excellent, then i've got plenty of space!

Uhhhhhh....you don't seem to take a backup into consideration? Drives are so cheap at this point why don't you just buy a 500GB, 750GB or 1TB, drive and use your other drive as a backup or vice versa? I know money is always tight but if you can't afford to store the data how are you going to afford to shoot the movie?

A quick not about your space requirements - you will have plenty of space for the .R3D files, and the proxies take up no space - but you must also consider if you are going to need to convert your footage to something else (e.g ProRes footage) for your editing process as that will add greatly to your space requirements.

Proxies are fine for basic narrative cutting, but as soon as you get beyond that you may get into lots of annoying rendering and it may be better of you to just render everything out at the beginning to avoid it slowing you down too much creatively during the edit.

It's a workflow thing you should thing about as it will definitely have an impact on your space requirements.

Well I want to take all of the footage that i'm going to use, and export it to a 1080 source, that I can take to my FCP editing rig and edit with.

So I mean, that shouldn't take up a super amount of space should it?

Depends on what your 1080 source is... E.g if you wanted to be working with DPX files or 10Bit Uncompressed for some reason, then you might find your space becomes more of an issue.

With Prores HQ you should be fine I imagine.

Pro was what I was planning on editing in, then after I was done with everything, I was thinking of outputting it to WMV HD or DiVX, because the player where it's going to be shown supports both, and it's going to be shown off of a DVD.
