Here's a challenge.

I just picked up a shoot where the client wants me to match a previously recorded Beta Sp 4:3 SD shoot with my Red on November 10th.

What would you recommend for:

Format, resolution, FPS, etc, and the best way to bring it down to SD on a PC with just RedCine. I doubt if the Adobe plugin will be ready by then.

thanks for your help.

aloha,

Keith

1. Shoot 60fps for clean conversion to 60i
2. Step down to f/16, if possible
3. Blow the crap out of highlights (overexpose) by several stops - just kidding, you can inflict this damage in post

Hi Keith,

Your joking? Just rend a Beta SP, very cheap & easy soloution.

You could try my G Analogue plugin in FCP to add fake colour cross-talk on the edges. Also, I'd add a fair bit of edge sharpness. Easiest way is to dub out to a SP tape and re-capture though. Boost the saturation a bit too. Or as Stephen rightly points out, rent a museum piece.

thanks guys - especially for the obvious answers.

Anything more specific on starting with 4K, 4kHD, 3k, 2k? - or the best way to output a SD file from Redcine? I have read of the some of the difficulty of getting good looking SD files.

I'm only concerned about the workflow from camera to one-light output.

BTW, I live on an island where there are no rental houses and to fly one in for this gig would not be worth it. I understand the irony, but some people think Red can do anything.

Thanks for your help

Hui -small planet Sarah,

Kohala is where I live. I'm doing a Documentary on the singer/storyteller Kindy Sproat now for PBS - Kohala's favorite son. You might remember Uncle Kindy? He lives at the end of the road at Pololu.

Good chance I know your family.

You'll have to call me whenever you get back "home."

I, like many others, thought we left tape behind - but the ghost of Beta surfaces once more. This is to match in to a tape shot years ago about a pilot whale attack on a snorkeler off Kona. It took her down forty feet then brought her back up to the surface while her buddy filmed it all.

Anyway, I'm going to interview the girl and the camerman.

a hui hou,

aloha,

Keith

You could also treat the beta footage with some of the other Nattress plugins
to get the beta closer to the Red footage and try to have them meet somewhere in the middle
