OK, here we go. I think I have this nailed down. Thanks to all for your advice thus far. If you guys don't mind, please take one last look at my list and tell me if I am totally off base and or missing something. My RED is ready to ship, so I need to move quickly.

To provide a little context...I teach at a community college in Michigan and the RED Camera that I am ordering will be used by advanced students in the program. We will be shooting everything from studio based music videos to short form documentaries. As lots of students (under supervision) will be handling the RED, I want to make its configuration as BEEFY as possible.

NOTE - in my package I did not include the RED drive. My fear is that it will not provide the "BEEFY" setup I am looking for. When the 16GB cards come out, I will be all over them...

And so, here is the list that I would like to finalize. Please feel free to rip it apart, praise my wisdom, etc. Seriously though, please give me your expert opinion. Thanks for your time.

ORDERING:

(1) RED Body
(1) RED EVF
(1) RED Pro LCD "7" or (1) Carrion C LCD "8.4"
(1) RED Power Pack
(3) Compact Flash (8GB)
(1) RED Flash (CF) Module
(1) Nikon Mount
(1) RED Battery Clip Belt (to avoid mounting on camera)
(1) RED AC Power Adaptor
(1) RED Case
(1) ET 15mm RED Bridge Plate
(1) ET Arri Dovetail 1030 9"
(1) ET Video Breakout Box
(2) ET 15mm Ultra Rods 8"
(2) ET 15mm Ultra Rods 12"
(1) ET Topside Combo
(1) ET Cheese Stick or (1) RED Top Handle + RED Top Handle Extension
(1) ET Handheld Rig (when available)

ALREADY HAVE:

(1) Panasonic Field Monitor
(1) Chrosziel 450 Matte Box w/ eyebrow and side wings
(1) Chrosziel Follow Focus
(1) Chrosziel Whip Handle
Zeiss ZF lenses (25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm)
(1) Oconnor Tripod/Head

Thank you one and all.

JEFF

I'm guessing your Chrosziel stuff is 60mm spacing and the ET plate is 100mm. If true, that would require an adapter and not really be optimal.

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for pointing that out.

You get an A for the day!

You are the coolest community college film program in the world...i hope your students realize that :)

couple things: First, in addition to the belt clip, get the quick plate. Im sure there will be many times when you won't want to be tethered to the camera.

Also, IMO, skip the 8" rods for some 18s. I too am using the nikon mount and an the combo of my 80-200 nikkor and the RR MB has me using the 18s to their absolute limit. I use a pair of 12s on top for the cradle, again almost to their limit.

For teaching purposes, and long shoots, the RED-DRIVE is not a bad solution...remember, 2.5 hours of 4K recording on one drive. I'd say that's pretty "BEEFY".

agreed. It's good to have cards just in case you're doing something that requires them (or like many you just prefer it), but I've been shooting with the drive exclusively and never had a single dropped frame or any other issue. When 32gig cards are $200, then, well... ;)
