As requested, Abel Cine Tech has created an Aaton handgrip bundle for the RED camera it consists of the Aaton carved walnut handgrip with a new momentary run/stop switch (in red!), a rod coupler and a Lemo2 (on handgrip) to Lemo4 (on RED) coiled cable. The Aaton rod coupler is for lightweight 15mm rods, so I would recommend our Universal Rod Adapter to 19mm studio rods.

This is a custom Abel-modified product. More information available on our website in our RED Store.

Any thoughts on if/how this might be compatible with the upcoming ET handheld rig, or any 15mm Studio config?

I'm glad you guys are doing this - that Walnut handle is one of Aaton's most brilliant and simple innovations ever.

I second that statement!

Is there a handgrip version for the left hand as well?

It might be a bit awkward with the ET rig, as that is meant to sit higher on the shoulder and then use handgrips positioned low and away from the body. The Aaton handgrip is designed to position high and close. It is two different styles. Personally for me I like the Aaton way, but I know plenty of others who swear by the ET style. This would be a personal comfort thing to judge.

As for 15mm studio, this would simply require a different rod adapter. We'll have a version of our Universal adapter for 15mm studio soon enough, but in the meantime we can offer products from Chrosziel or Zacuto to get you there.

If you want a really slimmed down handheld kit, Doug Underdahl's lightweight front rods rig along with an Aaton handgrip and the Arri follow focus & mattebox would be fantastic.

There is. Abel has made a variation of the rod coupler with a rosette on the left side as well. We found that instead of another walnut handle it was instead better to use a more traditional foam covered handle referred to as a bicycle grip. It's possible to position this so that you could reach up your finger to adjust focus or even pull a zoom or adjust aperture on the fly. A nice doc-style rig. This is what I had on my personal Aaton for years.

To get this would mean constructing a different kit of parts, which is possible but I don't know if we have much stock on these products at the moment. Aaton cameras never sold in the volume that REDs do...

For the majority of the work that I do... this would be a great configuration. Thanks Mitch for putting this Aaton handgrip package together and for all your input on the new Arri kit. Mitch, who do you want us to contact to purchase the Aaton hand grip?

Cheers,

Andrew

You can contact any Sales Rep. in any of the Abel offices. We are in New York, Burbank and Chicago. Or you can inquire via the website. Or lastly you could ask me via email and I'll forward you on to a Sales Rep.

Let me warn people about the Aaton handgrip solution. While it is sleek and incedibly comfortable, it is definitely more expensive than you probably think it is. The original parts are not exactly cheap and then we have to do some mods which cost money (for a technician's time and for parts). That and the flutuating costs of importing the handgrips from Aaton in France. But it is an excellent solution.

If anyone has their own old Aaton handgrip and would like it modified for their RED we can do this as well. Please contact me directly and I will put you through to the appropriate person in our Service Department.

I believe that ET has also made provisions for the Origo Start and Stop Switch for mounting on the rig.

Yes, the Origo goes right on the ET handheld system. I believe it might even ship with it as part of the kit.

We have been asked by one person if an Origo could be mounted in the Aaton handgrip. While such a thing is theoretically possible, Abel is not going to do it. If you want to stick your Origo in there you'll have to carve the walnut out yourself. "Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor not a woodcarver!"
