I'm producing a film in the Caribbean that will be shot on the Red One. It was always my intention to do a film out to 35mm for theatrical release. My issue though is that most theaters at least the few in the Caribbean are digital and play discs. If this is the case, why go to film? Do festivals still only accept 16mm and 35mm? This could save me a good deal of dosh.

Thx.

It varies by festival, but virtually every festival will screen other formats, from mini-DV tapes and standard DVDs (in some cases--better check!) to HDCAM. Cannes used to require 35mm prints for some sections, but I doubt even that's true now.

Final film out so you can make prints for conventional dist. Is going to be $150,000 using 2k. Less if your final movie is under 120min. Then it would run you about $1600-$1800 per print after that. If you have the money I would do it.

If you do well at a fest, and get a distribution deal and you don't have a final film out to deliver to them. They will be more than happy to do one for you, but it will be charge against your back end. Thier cost for such an operation will be huge. Having seen film out's of red stuff projected it will look a lot better, than an HD projection, hands down. Walking to the selling process with 35mm print will net you more money will you sell.
