  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon EOS 5D Mark II: 21MP and HD movies

Interesting -

...i'll be getting a D90 soon (for stills), so that inspired me to make my own version, using a displacement map. It has only one layer plus one tga image to deal with, instead of about 150 sliced layers. My method looks more or less as good (as far as i can tell), but probably renders quite a bit faster.

Here's the AEP (v 7.0), in case you're interested:

The same .tga file should work pretty much universally, with any app that has displacement map functionality. In AE, setting of 0.3 in vertical displacement gave decent results - this may vary between applications, of course.

Edit: i tried with Vegas - it works, so i added the .veg file to the zip.

BTW, lmao at this image from the forum:

So much investment around a badly implemented video function. People dream, they will wake up by the end of november.

The guys at Samys Camera told me today that 5D Mark IIs that are pre-ordered today might not even ship until March! :help: :bye2:

No, because I'm afraid that 5Dm2s would pop up on ebay or somewhere else sooner and I would be stuck waiting forever. I don't know what the best way is to get my hands on this camera. Any suggestions?

New LP-E6 Battery System

New LP-E6 Battery System

Looks like Canon "smarten" up and decided to change the battery type in 5D Mk II to a new proprietary LP-E6 battery. Aparently the new battery has a chip making it difficult for 3rd party suppliers to provide aftermarket alternatives. This ensures that your 3rd party B-511 batteries, which work with 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 1D, 1Ds and 5D, are effectively useless...:bye2:

Yep they did change the battery. Was at a 5DmkII event near London about 3 weeks ago now and they had a pre-production model worked great for a couple of hours, and the one thing that went wrong with the camera in the end was the new battery it didnt hold its charge and gave us errors all the time.

Andrew.

Software image stabilization?

Software image stabilization?

There have been some reports that the 50D live view includes software ("electronic") image stabilization, separate from any stabilization of the lens. (Also not to be confused with sensor-based image stabilization).

I wonder if the live view in the 5D Mark II has the same stabilization, and if the video output has it.

LOL My feelings exactly.

Here is what Canon has to say about this "new power supply" invention of theirs:

http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/contro...rticleID=2046&productID=249&articleTypeID=125

"The powerful new EOS 5D Mark II has an equally impressive power supply. ....Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or a working pro, the EOS 5D Mark II is an outstanding camera that produces exceptional images and multimedia. It’s all powered by an equally superb new power supply, backed-up by a comprehensive battery management system."

What a load of crap! They're just telling their customers that purchased battery grips, B-511 batteries and power adapters that they have been mugged, basically, and they can start purchasing their incompatible accessories again, and again, and again... What a joke!

BTW: Anyone wanting to buy B-511 batteries and Power adapter? Cheap!

So what AC adapter is going to work with it? Do you know?

I don't think those clowns thought of it yet. They've just obsoleted a whole heap of their own and 3rd party accessories. I know, I need external power supply for time lapse too. I have the "old one", but it doesn't look it is going to work. Without it, the camera is pretty much useless for extended time lapse sequences.

Maybe drill a hole and solder a couple of wires as a solution :clown2: Do you think it is going to void the warranty?

There is a Canon AC power supply, it's called an ACK-E6.

Also you can get just the dummy battery on it's own which is a DR-E6, if you want to rig-up your own power supply.

I don't understand the beef with changing the battery?
The old batteries sucked.

The new batteries last 30% longer than the old ones.
Also they have the smart electronics for storing charge cycles and indicating exactly how much power is left etc.

There was no reason other than corporate greed to make them incompatible. They are same size, so they could just add an extra pin, but make the new batteries compatible with the other 20 or so Canon cameras.

True, the genuine Canon B-511 batteries sucked, but the Chinese $20 replicas were fantastic and often last for 1000+ exposures. I expect the new E6 batteries to suck too.

The battery indicator is just a gimmick, really. I prefer to buy half a dozen cheap batteries without indicator than one with an indicator.

Well said Pawel... ! Disapointing "choice" on there part not to add Pin, and make them "legacy" compatable ... I've loved those $20 knock offs !

I suppose it's trendy to have fuel prices continually rise ...

More 5D Mark II videos...

http://www.stratenschulte.de/index.php?page=5dmkii

Once again I am troubled that they would through all of this and then downsample the video by a large amount before posting the videos. Why no 1080p?

All I care about is whether the video is going to hold up pixel-for-pixel at 1080p. The rest is conversation.

These videos do give me some good ideas for night shooting, though.

Awesome. Thanks, Andrew.

I really wish I had a contact at Canon USA, but I don't even know where to start with them or who I could send my reel to.
