  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi all,

So I tested a set of the Rosco Litepads last week, they really kick ass.

They are about 1 cm thick and come in tiles from 12"x12" down to 3"x3", so you can build as big a source as you want. They are light, burn extremely cool, and spit out an extremely soft daylight color temp light. The middle is all empty space, so you can drill a hole and screw it to a wall, or just hold it up with double stick.

A honeycomb or eggcrate would make them much more directional, and they are not dimmable, but you can just cut gell to size and pop it on there.

They are also dirt cheap. I have seen prices in the area of $2500 for a whole kit of 12 lights.

Nick will likely get mad for me mentioning it, but Abel carries the Litepads as well as other Rosco products. ;-)

I used some Litepads taped to a window at night and shot in profile to fake a soft dawn light when the actress "looked" out the window. Lovely soft wrapping light, and you can adjust it with some strips of paper tape. It also has much less green spike than some cheapo industrial competing products hitting the market.

Give me a call at the office tomorrow. Litepads are such a budget item that we don't have them in rental, so I'd have to see what is in Sales stock at the moment.

I have no idea what our prices are -- I'm not in Sales (can you believe it?). Give a call to our Sales Reps in NY or LA and they'll be happy to quote you.
 
They are super cheap but I have found they are not a very clean daylight source. We had to correct them quite heavily to make them match anything else. They are also not dimmable.

They certainly come in convenient sizes and are very affordable, but like most film gear, you get what you pay for.

Here's a video of a panel in action. This is the 1x1 foot panel + full minus green gel running off a cigarette lighter and an inverter.

This is T2.3 with no other lights except the high pressure sodium vapors. The incident reading on his key side was a 2/2.8 split.

The brightening and contrast is a little further than I would like, once it became H.264

I just wandered by the LitePads display at Studio Depot and did a doubletake when I saw the prices. I whipped out my iPhone, googled "LitePads" and this thread came up. Without anybody trashing the product, I figured I'd buy the 3" x 6" for $125 plus the AA battery pack option for $20 and test it out. It looks like an perfect source for eye light.

I'll post with my experiences when I come back from Detroit in a couple weeks.

Is that Chapin Hall holding the Litepad?
 
Anyone wanting to check out the LitePads can come see them set up on the showroom floor at Abel as well. We have various sizes on display in the NY office and I believe in LA as well.
