  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Show us your Red One Studio Mode vs. Handheld Mode

Am I the only one to notice that Shawn has mounted the mattebox backwards?

It's an interesting choice -- I've never seen anyone put the hinge of the swingaway arm on the Operator's side of the camera. Seems counterintuitive. What's your reasoning?

And please, it's not a criticism. I'm genuinely curious.

humm...

Lol, you noticed.

It was indeed intentional. The problem is that my Arriflex FF2 sits too far forward when using the Red zoom, so I had to flip the FF around. When I did that, there wasn’t room for the matte box arm, so I then flipped that around, then it all worked. I’ll try it again tonight and see if I can figure it out.

On my FF2 it looked like I should be able to move the gear to the other side of the little FF arm, as that would set the FF back far enough that I wouldn’t need to reverse it. But I couldn’t figure out how to do that, even after loosening the screw that’s in the center of it.

Wow, so you have everything backwards! You should be able to flip that gear and put it all where it normally goes. Or maybe you'll just shoot into mirrors!

while i await the delivery of monstercine's hydra clamp, i discovered a use for those unruly hand grips. this pic might show the red on sticks but it works perfectly as a handheld that uses standard red production pack (exception is the extra top mount and carbon x rod replacements). anyway, i haven't seen anyone else use the grips as arm extensions which places the lcd at perfect eye level and just far enough away so there's no more pesky neck strain.

btw - i also have the evf but it adds a little too much weight for my tastes

Thanks Mitch! I was ablet to flip the gear on my Arriflex FF and now everything works great :-).

Trick! I like it, though I also like keeping the handles available. Hmm, but a good use for people with only the production pack (one handle? wtf is that?)

FILMTOOLS for all expendables, support, toys, etc.

BUT I want to say this. The red chamios look great, but I don't like them a whole lot. Fleece - holds your sweat on the surface, doesn't feel the greatest either.
The standard flesh colored ones made of leather work best.

Hey Shawn, have you tried the microfiber chamois? We are stocking those in a variety of colors now, including red. You might like that better than the fleece you've been using.

Just be aware that the red zoom is even harder to put a follow focus on if you have to adapt to mini 15mm, like for the Micro matte box. I had to use a gear that was over an inch wide and it just barely reached!

We got our Pro-X from Zacuto in the US - quick service, no complaints. Actually got 2 of them - one to use on the RedCradle when shooting in shoulder mode and another that attaches to the belt-clip camera plate (the one with the longer cable). The second configuration I place on some foam on the ground when shooting in tripod mode - gives a good run time between boots, facilitates battery hot-swap, takes some weight off the sticks and makes it easier to access the joystick and menu buttons.
