Hi,

I've been searching the posts looking for some information about the 3k mode (not come up with much though), which allows up to 60fps. Is the 3k mode 'windowed' as it is for 2k, or does it use the full area? The finish is a 2k DI. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers!

It's windowed just like the 2k.

Not as bad, but still windowed.

I prefer 3k 60FPS over shooting in 2k, assuming we're using 35mm lenses.

Yes, 3k is windowed, but the field of view is still very good. If a 2k or 1080p finish is the end goal, and 60fps is needed (thus 4k isn't an option because it is limited to 29.97) then the oversampled result of 3k, when brought down to 2k (or 1080p), is preferable to shooting in 2k. Remember, 3k is twice the resolution of 2k, and when you downsample 3k to 2k IMO it looks better than native-shot 2k.

For high motion subjects (sports, nature, etc.), we've been shooting a lot of 3k/2:1/59.94, which, when played back on a 23.98 timeline gives a nice smooth slo-mo. We've found that a shutter speed of 192 works well for 3k/2:1/59.94 slo-mo playback.

In 3k/2:1, when using the RED Drive you have two choices for the max frame rate: 1) Set a project frame rate of 59.94 2) Set a project frame rate of lets say 23.98, then use Varispeed to set up a frame rate of 60fps.

If you set a project frame rate of 59.94 on the RED Drive, all footage shot to the drive will need to be at that frame rate. On many projects where mixed frame rates are needed, we often setup one resolution/aspect ratio/frame rate on the RED Drive, and alternate combos on RED CF cards, and switch out from the cards to the drives and back as needed.

Hope this helps you...
