  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IMS news please

This is what I got,

"Dear Shawn,

RED dislikes the IMS for now.
We do not know the reason, but OK.

Sorry, for having no better news about a helpful tool.

Have a nice day.

Mit besten Grüßen / Best Regards,

Aki Schirmer

MINI35 - PRO35 - OPTICS - WEISSCAM"
The bottom line is that both companies now feel any sort of "give in" would be a compromise. Neither one really needs each other to be financial prosperous.
wow

this is such a serious accusation.. these guys should know that the customers are who counts.. not their personal tastes..

btw.. thx for posting private mail.. now me knows to who me shouldn't send any sensible content.. no more porno pics my friend :bye2: :)

jarred.. do not be tempted.. ehehehehehe

Sometimes I am really surprised. Or am I overrating the private in private e-mail too much?

While one might argue about how wise it was to write such an e-mail in the first place, it is highly unethical to publish a private e-mail publicly without permission.

Now that several people have quoted it, 1dog can't even delete it. The damage is done...

I guess this private e-mail was written out of a moment of frustration. It was never meant as an official statement, so please do not slam doors shut that have just been slightly opened again.

Just for the record to keep this thread complete:

Dear RED users,
*
My name is Aki Schirmer and since July 2008, am the responsible Sales Manager for the IMS for RED One here at P+S TECHNIK and am fully authorized to make this statement.
*With the below statement, P+S TECHNIK would like to react to the current discussion and to the questions that RED users would like clarified.
*First of all, I would like to let you know, what is the idea behind the Interchangeable Mount System, the “IMS” by P+S TECHNIK.
*
The IMS allows the possibility to use lenses with less than 52mm backfocus length. This provides the possibility, that high quality lenses can be developed with a reasonable effort.
Our aim is to establish the IMS as an open standard.
Furthermore *it is a quite simple, and fast instrument for the camera crews, allowing a swift and uncomplcated change of lenses from various manufacturers instantly.
All P+S cameras are equipped with the IMS and a number of other manufacturers are negotiating with P+S to set up their cameras with the IMS in serial.
*
P+S TECHNIK’s management contacted Jim Jannard at*NAB 2006 and suggested the IMS.
Mr. Jannard was interested and asked P+S to introduce the IMS*to RED officially.
P+S did so and sent all necessary documents and samples to RED* in April 2008*
*
P+S always offered a solution, when RED claimed an issue:
*First claim was the removal of the front part of the camera. So we re-designed the IMS, so that the front part does not have to be touched - just the removal of the outer part of the RED PL mount has to be carried out.*
Second claim was the need of cutting the i-cable. Here, we offered a solution to store the i-cable in the lower compartment of the camera (the pictures are available here in the forum).
We also offer a toolkit for the exchange but the exact description of what tools are needed, are also stated in the mounting manual, for those, who have their own tools.
The issue of a thermal problem was not mentioned in any way before, but as we do know the problem of thermal dynamics for a long time, we already have chosen top quality materials for the IMS, to minimize the problem.
*
But P+S never received a clear statement from the different dialogue partners at RED we had contact to.
*
At this years IBC, our Marketing Manager and myself took the time to *visit the RED booth, to talk to Ted Schilowitz to let RED know, that we are willing to find an allround suitable solution for RED, for the RED owners and for P+S Technik .
To follow up this conversation that we had, I sent him a mail 14 days ago, with all necessary*informations regarding the IMS, the actual mounting manual, the picture-strip*and my personal apologies *for misunderstandings that might have happened before my time, and our willing to take the chance to restart “the solving of RED owners IMS problem”.
P+S TECHNIK would be taken aback, if a solution, which is good for the customers, should not be possible.
**
Looking at the current situation from our point of view, the IMS is available, all issues have been addressed without harming the camera functions, as proved by the several RED owners who *work on a day to day basis with the IMS.
*
The current situation of the RED owners is, that in case of assembling the IMS, the warranty is voided and that RED owners are suspended of further upgrades.
*
This situation is dissatisfying for all three sides, *for P+S TECHNIK, for a large number of RED owners, who are in a very insecure situation, and also for RED.
*
I ask the RED management to contact the P+S management to**find a suitable solution together for those customers who want free creativity and use the IMS on the RED One in a contemporary period.
*
Please don’t hesitate to contact me and let me know your feed back.

Best regards,

Aki Schirmer
P+S TECHNIK

That,s true Martin- I just edited mine out of my post. Perhaps others will do the same.
Done. But wouldn't it be better to ask the task to the poster himself first? The RED staff -- I mean, the Fire Chief has always access to the deleted stuff, anyway.

Not too much concern there, guys.

Jarred is not a kid. He has built this community (and the RED project too!) -- he knows very well his role in the growing up of the indie moviemaking movement. IMS and Birger altogether would/will be a RED bomb, that's for sure!

indeed :)

Hi guys, sorry for being late at this party.
Great reading, smart projects...
I'm just a little disappointed about the whole "no warranty=no Epic/sensors upgrade deal".
Thanks Sanjin for your effort (as usual).

Let's wait the P/S guys...

I truly am surprised buy the surprise people have about the voided warranty... did anyone REALLY think that we would accept cameras back with voided warranties?

Maybe someone can help me understand?

Sorry Jarred,
maybe my english is not so good.

I'm disappointed because I've bought and installed one IMS (yes, I'm guilty, I admit) "before" knowing that the warranty would be voided.

When I've discovered that the warranty on my camera was lost, my thought was:
"Ok, they are right, I can't do anything at this time, the mount is already on the camera".

And now I discover that I've suddenly lost also the whole upgrade deal.

That's why I'm sad.

I can't turn back time.

Edit:
Ok, maybe I can turn back mounts... But I've just made a public confession here :help:
Just to be clear: I'm the proud owner of two RED ONE's and only one had actually the IMS installed... :bye2:

Ouch El!!
That hurt.

You should have taken Jim up on that job offer!

That, said: Are you happy with the IMS? It sure looks like a superclever product...

Thanks Gunleik for your words.

The IMS is simple, functional, and yes, superclever.

I use this mount to swap PL, BNCR, Nikon (all dumbs). Once installed and collimated, gives you the ability to change mounts in less than 10 seconds.

I can't imagine how it produces damages to the body, however I believe that is true, in some way, maybe for the heat dissipation or new positioning of the cable.

In the end, I don't want to give you guys the impression that I am desperate.

I've just made a wrong decision in a bad timing. My fault.

P.S.
Don't know if the job offer from Jim is still valid, but in this case, as a RED's future employee, I will hope for a special treatment...
:clown2:

We have been very clear to P+S what they need to do, and what the problem is. If we have to fix it for them, we may as well make one ourselves.

Jim

P+S Technik (Aki Schirmer) now you can see the ball bounce and landing on your side of the net.

Waiting to your replay or we are loosing this game pretty fast...

Expecting from P+S Technik a sort of Boris Becker's return of the ball to pass high over the net...

Hello Jim,
Thanks for posting a definitive reply to the present situation.
Are you able to let us know what the problem is and what needs to be done or is that still part of an active private dialogue between RED and P+S?

Jarred has previously stated that one of the problems was how the IMS transfers heat - especially since the RED generates quite a bit of it on its front end. Another is how it handles the i-Cable.

P+S seems to claim that they have resolved these problems with a re-design. Either they have not sent a new mount to RED, or RED simply disagrees in their conclusion. Either way the buck stops (for now) with P+S. Here I take it as a positive sign, that P+S are now officially aware of this thread.

As ET shows, RED can be very supportive of third party suppliers, if they are pro-actively playing ball. And as Birger has shown, RED can also forgive past mistakes and move on - for the benefit of the rest of us.

Though I would really, really, really like the IMS+RED to succeed, I am not holding my breath for now.

It's good to see Jim involved in this discussion. I can only hope that Aki Schirmer (from P+S) and RED will talk in person and make this happen. This system is a great way for people who are very low budget to work with several types of lenses. I do not feel comfortable changing my mounts and having to collimate them. The idea of easily switching is bliss.
