  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There is NO such thing as Youtube Compression or "Compression Killed it" excuse..

Ummm...youtube is crap and you should not judge ANYTHING by how it looks on there. There are so many things they can do to make it look bad. There's also many things that the uploader can do to make it look bad (like uploading a heavily compressed file.) If you upload a file that's bigger res than youtube wants, then they will resize it--poorly.

It's all about the compression. Look at the source (as in who's posting) of the "True HD" trailers. Not everyone even has the ability or rights to post that quality of footage to Youtube. Also those "True HD" movie trailers look OK in that tiny little window, but in reality, they are crap quality too... They're only about 1/4 the resolution of DVD video.

That said, the "4K" clip is a pretty low quality submission and it could have been submitted in "HD". So this is an Apple to Oranges comparison anyway.

I don't think 4k is 4 times the resolution of HD. Just as 20MP isn't twice the resolution of 10MP. Then again, there weren't any of this "new maths" when I went to school.

The HD clip doesn't even have the correct aspect ratio....
You can upload videos to Youtube at a higher resolution(480*360)...
The 4k is only 320*240.
There are also various tricks and hacks which can improve the quality of a Youtube video.

4k is just over twice the linear resolution of HD, but over 4 times the area resolution...

Dude, it's YouTube. If you seriously think YouTube is a good judge of quality, go out and buy the cheapest DV camcorder you can find. By the time its on YouTube, who knows? Maybe people will post something saying, "If HD is four times the resolution of DV, then why does this poorly compressed HD look worse than this well compressed DV?"

There are some known tricks to getting good image out of YouTube. That is why some YouTube videos are bad while some look very good. Download an FLV file of a good looking video from YouTube and inspect its statistics, etc. That shall give you some hints and a starting point. Also search for tips on getting good YouTube encoding on internet. But be careful about crap out there. Some suggestions are not valuable, but some are.

This is one of the most useless threads I've seen in my life.
And, oh boy, have I seen useless threads...

Oh and just as an attempt to explain it: The 4k stuff looks mediocre because the color grading is weird, the highlights blow out and the shutter is too long most of the time. The "hd" trailer looks good because it's f*'in Dark Knight! What did you expect?

how does this thread is useless ... ? It is a mean to understand the difference between something good and something bad.

are you saying that if i want to watch a good trailer it have to be the dark knight? and it can't be something shot on RED?

since there are 3000+ cameras out there and lots of stuff were shot on RED, can someone point me a youtube link of a video shot on RED which you think is color graded professionally?

the reason i'm asking this because it can inform other RED users that better quality videos can be posted in video sharing websites if the compression is for them is done well.
