My Red is in the next batch to be made so its getting pretty close. However, as much as I'd like to get my hands on it, I'm thinking of waiting for the Mysterium X sensor (although who knows at this stage what the benefits of this will be) to be ready before getting my camera. Being in the UK its seems like a sensor upgrade is a fairly big hassle, though the possible UK Red centre at Pinewood may make this easier.

My question is this, just go ahead, or wait and see and save a lot of potential hassle down the road (as long as the Mysterium X remains on schedule).

Cheers

I know this might be an unpopular thing to say here, but there might be an argument for waiting. What if you bought a camera 4 months from now, and then 5 months later, a Monstro sensor upgrade is offered, or new Red Ones start shipping with upgraded sensors? What if the upgrade costs $10,000 USD for existing Red One owners?

Tough call. It's really going to depend on what the upgrade is, and how much it will cost. I don't think anyone knows that yet, which could start to fuel more and more threads like this one.

And who said that after Mysterium X is ready as an upgrade it will be the standard sensor for REDONE cameras? You might still have to upgrade to it.

All this, is so long down the road and RED is such an unexpected company that there might even not be a Mysterium X upgrade program the way we perceive it now. The same way Scarlet and Epic have changed even before they are made.

If you are ready for your camera, and have the money for it, i suggest you to go ahead and buy it. It is a real thing and you can hold it in your hand. The rest is speculations.

Mysterium X will most likely be end of '09 based on what has been announced thus far.

Simple solution: If you need your camera now, buy it. If you don't need it, don't buy it.

Mysterium X will be an upgrade to RED ONE. This was covered under the EPIC post on RECON.

However I think that if REDs history has taught all of us nothing it has taught us that RED takes care of its users in a manner not even approached by other companies.

I would argue that the time with the camera will pay for itself.

Sorry, I guess I missed that post. I thought "Monstro" was the new type of sensor that would eventually being going into all the new cameras? I thought Red One's upgrade would be to the new, higher-DR Monstro sensor?

Tom, looks like that is what Monstro is... But Mysterium X will come first. EPIC and SCARLET will ship with Mysterium X. The RED One can be upgraded to Mysterium X at some point later next year and, after EPIC has shipped. The RED One also has an upgrade to Monstro at some point.

EPIC purchasers get a free upgrade to Monstro. See Jim's opening post in this thread: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15858

I see. Thanks, Jeff. So Mysterium X is basically faster with a little more DR? Is that the advantage? If that is the case, it doesn't sound like it would be worth a 1-year wait for someone like the thread starter. If it was Monstro, then maybe.

Hmmm... I need to keep up with these threads a little better. So is DSMC based on the Monstro sensor? Or do we not know about its sensor?

I wonder if Jim's announcement about Scarlet and DSMC in Novemeber will be before the Canon 5Dm2 starts shipping?
