Help! Since the RED lens support isn't out yet, has anyone figured out a way to jerry rig lens support for the lens in the meantime? We're having trouble finding a way to make it work.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Offhollywood showed some pics with their lens being supported by a Zacuto bridge mount and a bolt with a thin foam pad on the head. Could also be done with a RED universal mount.

To expand on this, you could thread the bolt up through the bottom of the mount into a nut that's tacked (welded) onto the underside of a piece of metal strap, bent to cradle the lens, put some foam or rubber on the strap to not screw up your lens. .

Hopefully proper support will come sooner than later, I would be reluctant to use the lens until it arrives. The Zacuto option is less than ideal.

I've been using a Red universal mount, which goes onto 19mm rods and gives me a centered, 3/8" threaded hole. I screw a bolt up through that hole and put a little round furniture pad thingy on top of it. The pad I found at Home Depot happens to wedge nicely onto the screw.

To mount the lens, I set the rough height of the support, leave the universal mount free to slide forward and back, and then sit the lens on the pad and slide the lens back into the PL mount. Then I tighten the PL mount, turn the lens support bolt until it becomes quite snug against the lens, and finally tighten the universal mount.

I'm looking forward to a real solution, but for now this is working for me and feels quite safe for normal tripod use.

Hello Dean,
I believe I could whip out a proper support quickly if I have access to a lens for a few hours. I just need to take good measurements of the relevant diameters. I'm located in west LA and would gladly go and measure at location near by here. That would be a proper support for weight as well as a lateral movement with a built in handle.
Let me know if someone in this area has received the lens yet.

The support I whipped up for Mark was just a temporary solution, but it is rock solid for normal tripod use. The same could be said for the above mentioned bolt on the universal adapter. But these won't do for any non-gravitational force situation, such as car mounts. As soon as RED, Jacek or someone else comes out with a ring that wraps the lens barrel with a threaded hole at the base then a proper support can be attached. By the way, Zacuto will soon have an adjustable rod with swinging threaded head to act as a universal support for just such a mount.

Jacek, if you do build something, be sure to include an eccentric mount hole for a zoom motor on a J4 on the top. The best spot to support this lens anyway is right near the zoom ring so no reason to have to have two pieces of bracketry.

support ready

support ready

AS you wish Mitch,
I just finished the first support bracket for Dean. CNC machined split ring that fits around the cover ring. Same diameter as the front.
I put threaded holes all around for acs. There is solid mounting anchor for a carry handle that I'll make next. The Heden motor bracket will mount to the threaded holes. I'm getting that ready too. The support foot is adjustable up and down on 3/8 stud. The height is made for ARRI base plate (adjustable 5mm each way )but I'll also make a little plate that can be mounted on the Red 19mm bridge after removing the mini rod adapter.
See attached pictures.
The price is $380 but I'll discount down to $320 for the next three weeks orders. Please contact me via pm or my email jacek@optitek.org so I can get all orders in the next batch.

Anodized

Hello Evin,
Yes it's black anodized with semi-gloss finish to match the lens. The second pic was taken before anodizing

While Jashunter for what its worth i think your nuts....

I am sure many will agree that they would of preferred if we did not hold back delivery of the lens just to wait for lens support, which clearly you can get from other sources....

Look at post #9 in this thread.

Jason, We do indeed have a support bracket in the works.
It's a simple, sturdy bracket with an adjustable foot to accomodate the variety of setups used with the RED.
I expect the first batch to be ready in about two weeks.

Jared, you should have run this lens through us prior to production.
Oh well....
