  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Delivery process to Europe

I am very sure we were talking about cameras, eisenstein, and anyways, the times they are achanging in Amsterdam; nowadays the police does routine body searches, mostly for weapons though:biggrin:

Sorry man, I did not read in the last post that you lived in Amsterdam... so sorry for that, Didnt mean to offend you or your Country. I just like to quote movies.....

Havent been In your Contry tough, lloking forward to be in the Rijksmuseum!

UPDATE
FedEx inform me (without any input from me) that it is ZERO rated for duty. That's the whole package including EVF etc. Great.

Just had to shell out £3000 for VAT though - but I'll claim that back in due course.

Wow, it all seems just so arbitrary! Some people getting charged 0%, others 4.9% and others a variation in between for individual items. :pinch:

0% is good news of course, so I'm hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst customs rate when I take delivery!

I only paid import duty on the Tshirts - camera and accessories were zero rated after I quoted TARIC codes to Fedex - hope this helps

Hi 4igiff/Mike

Can you list the TARIC codes you told Fedex.

I've now seen or been sent codes by UK Redusers for actual deliveries in the UK which have been different for each person!

At least one had batteries at 4.7% and accessories at 6.0%. Then the question is what is defined as an accessory rather than an essential part of a working camera kit? For example if I buy an SLR kit, I doubt customs break it down into all the bits for duty purposes.

And some don't seem to be valid codes on the UK Taric lookup:
http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds/cgi-bin/tarchap?Lang=EN

I'm guessing those are US TARIC codes which are only partially the same as EU ones. Unfortunately can't seem to find an equivalent US Taric lookup to check descriptions.

I guess it's a lottery, but if you got it all at 0% with your codes, then those are the ones I want!! :w00t:

Cheers
Eric

I have mislead you about everything being zero rated - I seem to have paid duty on the 18-50 lens - but I chose to offer a TARIC code for the lens rather than lump it in with all the other accessories, so probably my mistake!

Camera - 85258030 00 - 0%
Accessories - 85299020 00 - 0%
Camera lens - 90021100 50 - 6.7%
T Shirts - 61091000 00 - 12%

If I was doing this again, I would put the lens in with the Accessory code
I suspect that is what Fedex are now doing

All my other purchases from the US (Viewfactor, ET, Visual Products) have come in at 0%

Cheers

There are several codes and if Fedex think it looks like a video camera they will classify it as one. But the code for Video cameras comes under Television and the 2 codes refer to cameras that can act as a tape recorder (ie with audio & video inputs) that is rated at 12.5% or ones that don't have separate inputs 4.9%.

Red One is patently not a video camera in any sense so it can only be classified as a digital camera. The code for that is 8525 80 3000.

I don't think that's likely to change because with Nikon SLRs now able to shoot at 25 frames the area is getting very blurred.

Those of you guys who paid 4.9% should be able to claim it back.

John

I would add that it is up to the importer/or you to argue that the camera and separate components are all part of one complete assembly. All mine came in at 0%, lens EVF, batteries everything. It can be argued that the camera body is not a camera until it has a viewfinder and lens.

The main thing is don't just accept what they say.

John

Thanks everyone. I think anecdotal evidence is useful until Customs gets to know RED!

Keep posting your experiences - I will when I get mine in the next month or so.

6.7% for lenses on their own is probably right. But when part of a kit I think it's arguable.

One question which has already been asked... but not yet answered... are all deliveries by FedEx, or are other companies sometimes used?

Also, I had a long chat with HM Customs and Excise (or HMRC as they are now known). They went over all the different options with me. Two important points they made were:

1. although separately different parts have different rates of duty, they are happy for you to lump everything in with the MAIN code. As the camera body is the most expensive part, this will be the code you can use.

2. they told me that the SHIPPER (i.e. RED) should put the TARIC code on the package when sending it.

Do Red currently do this? From what I have read, I am guessing not.
Will they do it on request?

My camera has now been sitting at Stansted for more than 2 days "Awaiting Customs clearance".

Can people who have received their cameras give me any idea how long this takes?

How do FedEx contact you? or do you pay the Duty/VAT when they deliver to you?

Fedex at Stanstead will call you (not over the weekend) and ask for payment of the VAT. They shouldn't ask you for any more. I got mine a few weeks ago that was the case. I noticed that the Red commercial invoice described the camera as "digital stills". That's fine by me.

Good luck. My guess is you'll have it by Tuesday.

John

Hi! There's lots of advices and personnal stories and experiences, and searching on the forum for Taric codes is very random... Anyone, Red maybe, has a REAL list of Taric codes for the Red and components? Red must have a list of their accessories Taric codes as they export it... And they should posted in a sticky case sensitive thread as this comes up quite often and is a really touchy and costly issue... Thanks to help clarify this for a lot of us...

I have a list of TARIC codes, which I compiled form reading these boards and a long chat with HMRC.

However, RED do NOT use the TARIC codes. Instead they use the US "Harmonized Codes" which start off with the same 4 digits, but the rest of the number is different.

I had a phone call from FedEx last night, and they said that as long as I gave them my VAT number, they would release the camera and I could pay the VAT later.

NO DUTY TO PAY!!!!!!!

An excellent result!

Red puts the harmonised codes with the inventory that ships with your kit. FedEx will look at those codes and then match them up to whatever the corresponding TARIC is (the last four digits are different I believe).

My camera was 0% - no negotiation required.
