  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I know this has probably been covered before but search hasn't been very helpful.

We are doing a marketing campaign that centers around the Red one and our name change. When I was asked what the megapixel equivalent of 4K was I was at a loss.

I found this website

http://web.forret.com/tools/megapixel.asp?title=Red+One+(4K)&width=4520&height=2540

It claims red is 11.5 Megapixels at 4k. I'd like to believe this but it sounds a little too good.

Can anyone clarify?

Thanks

That's right for the full sensor. For 4k 16:9 it's nearly 10mp.

EDIT > Graeme already got it with his quick replay...

If you just count the number of photosites, and this is what Nikon and Canon do with their Bayer CMOS sensor as well, RED comes out to 11.48 megapixels for the 4520x2540 sensor area.

Now, the largest recordable area (at this time) is 4096x2304, which is 9.43 megapixels.

As has been discussed here, many factors play a role in actual resolution that the camera can resolve or reproduce and that seems to fall around a nominal 3.2K when talking about a 4K image. But don't let that discourage you, no other bayer sensor or conventional CCD sensor camera can resolve their native resolution either. Image processing, OLPF, optics, etc.. all play a role. The real benefit to RED One's 4K resolution is that it creates a means of oversampling for producing very sharp and pristine 3K and 2K images through proper post processing. Just as the upcoming 5K EPIC will give us pristine 4K via oversampling.
