When do u guys think APPLE would come up with RED RAW codec.

No it's not. The quicktime component on the site only allows the playback of proxies. FCP does not natively support R3D files - they need to be transcoded before use or you are restricted to proxies that are not de-bayered. There have been several rumors that FCP will have native support in the next few months.

Nick.

The guys from Plaster-City told very differently loud and clear: http://www.ace-filmeditors.org/newace/audio.html

and also on "mythbusters" ... what's up with that??

Finally I'll be able to test it in the next few days ...:construction:

I listened to the recent ACE broadcast and didn't hear anything about native R3D support in FCP. Did I miss something?

FCP does not natively edit REDCODE. RED have very cleverly come up with a workaround where the camera generates quicktime wrappers for each .r3d file. You can drop those immediately into FCP and start editing, but you are editing quicktime files referencing the REDCODE, you are not editing REDCODE.

That said, I think the whole native redcode support thing is actually kinda silly in a way. It's my understanding that when editing redcode in premier, which does support native redcode editing, you have to edit on the lowest possible quality and resolution settings to get 24fps playback on even the fastest computers available, and we're not even talking dissolves or multi cam. Of course, computer are only getting faster and a the time will come when editing redcode will be practical and everyone hopes Apple will be ready before then, but until that day comes, the proxies are actually an extremely useful and practical solution.

For me, the real question is when will Apple fix the quicktime issues, like the frigg'n gamma problem. That bugs the shit out if me.

Hoping to find out what the deal is on Premiere but it sounds about right. You gear quality way down to edit and then gear up for your final exports. Not a bad workflow though- at least you avoid all of the time-consuming XML and transcoding to other formats.

this is true, your right that at least then you have the choice, but I think a lot of people, dare I say most, would prefer the option to edit 2K in realtime (almost realtime on my year old laptop!) than buy top of the line gear so they can barely squeek out 24 fps on the lowest settings possible.

but again your right, the sooner they implement it the better.

the adobe guys edited quite fine on a laptop at IBC.
but i am suspicious you are right brandon and the adobe thing wont be the holy grail everybody is waiting for, because the difference between some edits and a project timeline of 2,5 hours is huge.

OH, also want to mention that the OP said "for color correction", and even though he says FCP, I think he might mean Color. I believe Apple DID announce native grading of REDCODE in Color. Not sure what happened with that though.

anyone know?

It's near the end of 03_Redcode_R3d_Media.mp3 when Michael says that currently there's only a few apps supporting Redcode nativly today - being FCP 6, Assimilate Scratch (conforming), Redalert and Redcine.
