I'm trying to decide which of the two Zeiss Ikon ZF lenses to get...the 85mm or the 100mm. I do a lot of headshot interviews, medium closeups from mid chest to the top of the person's head. Can any Zeiss owners tell me how far back from the subject (in feet or meters) the camera has to be to get this kind of shot with both these lenses?

Sam,
go for the 85mm, it's cheaper, faster and will give you the size that you need. The 100mm does have macro capabilities but unless you see a use for that, then don't spend the extra money. I have both lenses by the way. The 85 gets used much more.
as far as distance goes, I'd guess about 8-10 feet from subject with the 85.
Regards,
Shane.

i disagree. i had both, but got rid of the 85, because wide open it was only useful for dream sequence type shots, too milky. the 100 is sharper all the way to wide, and the macro capability is just the icing on the cake. i prefer the 50/2 macro also. you can always make it milky with filters if you decide to.

8 to 10 feet sounds about right for me. I have heard so many good things about this lens (the Zeiss 100) but I need a lens that'll give me a headshot in the average sized room. Usually I can't get much more than about 10 feet from the subject.

Lenny,
I agree that the 100mm is sharper but the question was also about shooting a MCU and I think that, between the two choices, the 85 would be a better choice for Sam's needs. The 50mm would probably be the lens that I would put on the camera to start with.
I don't often use a lens at 1.4 but it's also nice to know that it's possible.
The 100mm is a kick-ass lens but maybe a little too long for interview situations.
Also, the thing to remember is that when you get this long, 15mm in focal length difference is not a lot of difference in FOV. If they made a 60mm, that would probably be the one that I would recommend.(size - wise)

Shane.
