  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

High Speed Red 1000 Fps

Sorry, I inadvertently left off three zeros! 40,000,000fps is correct.

The supercolider is essentially a pair of huge cameras watching these giant electromagnets blasting particle pairs in opposing directions at one another. Simple in concept but absolutely insanely stunning in the scale of achievement.

It is hard to fathom unless one puts it into perspective. They are trying to capture what happens approximately 3 nanoseconds (I think 3 is correct) after the Big Bang. I couldn't understand that until I realized they are talking about 3 dollars of the trillion dollars that the bailout could have eventually cost:blink:

Think of it this way:

Stretch out your arm and look at your fingers. It takes about three nanoseconds for the light bouncing off your fingertip to reach your eyeball.

Not sure how long it takes from hitting your eyeball until it is processed by your brain. That's really uncompressed RAW!

I think that depends on how many beers have circulated through the brain. :)

The use of 1000 fps is really limited. You can pop a balloon filled with water, splash some liquid, wave some hair and then... do some more liquid splashing. Lots of other motion gets really really slow and boring.

Also lighting for 1000 fps second is really difficult. First you need tons of light and second most light sources flicker at that speed. Best is to use 6k+ HMI's or 5k+ tungsten lights which are big and heavy, consume lots of power and in the case of tungsten melt your actor or food away.

I agree Sander, I would be thrilled with 400 to 500 fps. I'm sure that is not too far off.

You were likely watching "60 Minutes." The "camera" at CERN is a 60 megapixel imager that can capture 40,000fps.
...
Anyone wanna guess who made it?

I haven't checked, but I'm thinking Dalsa is behind it...

Sorry some of you don't seem to need the 1000fps capabilities of the Phantom HD. We have clients lining up to rent out our cameras on a constant basis so I guess someone finds these speeds useful. There are dozens of car and beauty car commercials running daily all over the world shot on Phantom. If anyone would like to see a creative use of the Phantom HD, check out Max Paine opening in theaters on Friday. There are a number of shots done on the camera in the finished film. Speed Racer had some as well and there are a few more coming down the pike in the months to come.

These are major Hollywood theatrical releases, which is something that RED has not yet had. No offense to RED; I know there are a number of them on the way and Phantom was around first. I just don't like the idea of people acting like the Phantom is such a specialty camera that its capabilities aren't that useful. It is in use constantly.

Going to sleep now. It's late and I'm ornery. ;-)

Sorry Mitch, I didn't mean to say that the Phantom doesn't have it's use. It certainly does and you are right that it is being used in lots of commercials. But it is a very specialised field of work and required lots of preparation. My point was that if people think they can just go outside and film something beautiful in 1000 fps they might get disappointed. So I think RED better put their energy making a camera with a better image than making a camera for super high speeds.

I agree with you... but as we make better sensors with better images, speed comes automatically.

I predict Red will continue to make better sensors with better images for many years to come. :)

Our sensor program is Priority One.

so the phantom was never the main system, it was a special item to capture special things.

i would rather choose a working horse with the ability to shoot highspeeds....no need for doorstops until there comes the moment.----but its good for others to have the choice.

I want both....

The time will will come,

I was just asking the RED legends when we will get high speed at around 300 FPS, Having a 1000fps would be awesome if they could ever do what PHANTOM has done.
I just didn't want to buy or RENT a Phantom for slo mo... Having two different cameras on set drives me nuts.

None the less PHANTOM is a fricken great camera, image qualtiy as well.
RED ONE is equally as good and when it can do at least 300fps or more, well in short, it will have no rivals.

It's only 2 steps from being the king of the mountain.

in such a short time, RED has proven to kick arse.

I love it!

did i miss something?

is knowing and nicholas cage not hollywood?

They have not yet been released.

RED One is a legitimate production device. So is Phantom HD. That was my point. Certainly there will never be thousands and thousands of Phantom HDs as there are now RED Ones. That isn't the point and there doesn't need to be that many. But there is and will be a sizable number because they are very much in demand for serious production work. There are many commercial spots that are shot entirely on the Phantom. There are also many that the Phantom shoots alongside a RED One or 35mm. And the same goes or will go for major motion pictures.

Who says Phantom won't be used as "A" Camera on a studio feature? We do lots of work with lots of clients and unless they allow us to we cannot publicize where are cameras are currently in use. Often we have to wait until close to the release.
