Not because I'm shooting soon, but am pondering budgeting for a couple of projects invloving vehicles that could run over a crash cam.. Don't want to put a "precious" Red into a crash cam housing if it is the primary/main camera for the production! Should I be thinking consumer HD camera(s) or 16mm? What do you guys recommend as a substitute to the Red camera for use in rough handling/potential damaging situations?

(I did do some searching on this forum, but didn't find what I was looking for)

thx,

Sony ex1 or ex3...both 1080p and 24p. Good image to go with red( nice color and very sharp). Can be upscaled a bit and still hold ( obviously not like the red). No HVX, bad choice ( too soft for blowup at all and if you shoot in 1080 its interlaced. Same with xl-h1, go with the sony ex1 or newer ex3. Good luck! Let us know what you choose and how it goes!

The definition of "crash cam" is completely dependent on your budget. If you are doing a stunt that costs $200,000 per take, then an 18 thousand dollar camera could quite easily be considered your crash camera. On a lower budget, it may not be.

When Speed was shooting in Toronto, they trashed 2 or 3 Arri 435's. Is a $250,000 camera a crash cam to you?

I would say that with clever rigs and intelligent camera placement you hardly ever have to destroy a camera to get a shot.

Remember to shoot safely. It is easier to replace a camera than a life.

Hi,

I usually use a Bell and Howell Eyemo, fairly indestructible but only a few hundred dollars if the worst happens.

Hi Guys,
Oh thanks very much! I like all these ideas. g3nov.. I'm with you: save the camera! Extras get paid too much to just stand around and look interested. Hey Brent.. did you work on Speed? Excellent flick. I can't speak of the film I just worked on, but "there may be a film shot recently" which sent more Arri 435's than that back to Panavision..one of them had it's parts strewn over a hundred feet from the impact point! :bye2: (Not GI Joe.. I hear they used Red's for crash cams?)

Hi,

Red is a great deal cheaper than a Genisis, F35 etc so will get used as a crash camera by many.
