It's likely a firmware fix but I dare say it could be something within the camera that is different from unit to unit.
I do believe that not two cameras are exactly the same, even when leaving red factory and difference get bigger with the camera life. And this is not specific to red. I know people that do test several exact same model of camera sometimes even from different rental house and choose some from the lot...
I haven't had too much problem with the boot up hang, but I agree that it is always a bit scary and even if the camera had always booted on second time, most of the time I am watching (or listening) if it really boots on second attempt...thinking don't let me down now in the middle of this production...;-)
I had never need to unplug the lcd, drive or evf to have the camera boot up (I don't use red battery but cityteck 190w/h).
Personally I always wait at least 5 seconds (and normally more likely 10 or more seconds) before rebooting the camera, for boot up hang, camera firmware update, black shading, etc...
