Hello my name is Juan, i´m from Chile and i will recieve my red one camera soon. So I´m looking for lenses . Any opinion will be appreciate.
Second,I would like to know if the red one camera can shoot in 2k using 35 mm lenses or super 35mm lenses. If not and only in 4k , having a 2k smoke for post production will make it posible to convert the 4k images into 2k .?
Or should i get super 16mm.?
Finally if anybody can give mea list of how many batteries and cards and drives should one get if is going to work mainly in tv advertizement. And accesories too please.

Thanks in advance :

Juan

With 35 mm lenses you can shoot 2k and 3k , sow it is not problem . When you are in 2k you will lose only DOF. You don not need to convert any footage to 2k , camera is not shooting 4K raw , and then in REDCINE or REDALERT you can render out any format HD , 2K , 4K .
Also about batteries and cards , you need minimum 4 Bat , and min 4 cards .
For cars it is easy because if you have Laptop on set you can copy files from CF in ~3 min , sow you can youse only 2 card .

You'll probably end up shooting 4k and posting in 2k/1080/SD as most.
Image wise there are only benefits in shooting 4k.

I'd say you'll need @ least 5 CF cards and a drive (or two) to cover the basic needs. You will not always be in a setting where you can download stuff from the CF cards or drive, and as to highspeed, the drive gives you (currently untill the 16 GB is actually shipping...) more options.

Batteries. You'll need at least 4 and 2 chargers.

As to lenses, it is an individual question. If you are mostly (or rather ONLY) working for yourself, you can do well with the 35mm still lenses. They are somewhat limiting, as to focusing and cameramotion (with an AC) but they can make wonderful images.

If you are going into normal film productions, they are not really an option in a commercial context. (@ least not here) You should stay PL and kit your RED up with standarized film equipment. You'll really make people unkomfortable if you're going otherwise.

Just my 2c

Juan,

I am from Chile, I'm glad someone else is buying the Red One in Chile. Maybe we can talk over the phone or we can get together some time. I can guide you through what (I think)are the best accessories for your new camera. I have invested 40K+ in accessories for my camera, so I think I can give you a good start based on my little experience with the RED One.

…. Y podemos hablar en español!!!

Hey Juan,
I jsut finished a feature with the camera and may start another on it and some ads / music video...
I will be in Chile soon to visit so shoot me a call or email

From my experience, what does can do more can do less... Why shoot 2K when you can shoot 4K. You will get all the benefit of 35mm DoF and all the necessary tools are available to "downconvert" easily your footage for post in your prefered format.

If your main concern is lenses budget, then I would say that shooting 2K with 16mm is a better choice. It is sad though. Compare that concept to shooting 16mm with a 35mm camera (if it were possible)... Loosing 3/4th of your sensor capacity is really too bad... But there are very good 16mm lenses on the market for cheap. THey are much cheaper to rent, and to buy (used especially!)...

Also, I think that's loosing all the quality benefits of your camera. But all the guys who replied first here pretty much nailed very good opinions and personnal tastes tha should help you decide what to do. And better than all, you seem to have made local buddies you can exchange with for all you're accessories and other concerns. That's great and huge value!

Good luck! Chile is beautiful! Make awesome images! (in 4k... ;p)

Juan, I'm originally from Chile too. Based on my experiences in chile (mainly through Chilefilms). Storage: I suggest having several CF cards, (optional 16GB CF cards or a RED Drive for high speed) and an CF-HDD copy system on location. For lenses, there is an assortment of PL lenses in Chile so you technically don't need to buy one, you could consider owning a single Nikon set or a RED zoom and then renting as needed if the purchasing budget is tight. I have RED# 699 and may be able to help you, just PM me if you need any other opinions on what you should get.
