Canon EFS 17-85mm zoom test is online!

it's not about to compete with RED Pro 18-85 T2.9 zoom at all.

It could be only a low cost alternative for RED lens.

Also it could be an extraordinary lightweight (475g) lens solution for a handheld shooting with RED.

"...at first sight at least, an ideal all-in-one ‘walkaround’ lens for Canon’s APS-C SLRs (and now also for RED),

which will cover the majority of photographic opportunities when travelling light."
(A quote from the link below).

The test is going to be continued in outdoors that is up to the weather in Vienna.

After my last sunny weekend that I spent outside of Vienna,

then the election result that leaves

Austrian politics in turmoil

and also a funny hack-attack with a sort of

abuse of my photo as an avatar at this forum

I finally finished the test I promised before.

Now the Canon EFS 17-85mm zoom test is online!

Canon EFS 17-85mm is a cheap and lightweight zoom and pretty good documentary lens solution

for 17-85mm sort of range shots in a case that you would have IMS for RED, Birger or Alesniak EF mount.

GOOD:

- ...it delivers on this potential, with good imaging performance over much of its range,

especially in that extended telephoto region...

BAD:

- Most intrusive is the green/magenta chromatic aberration at 17mm,

which is highly visible in a wide variety of shooting situations.

- The lens also exhibits significant barrel distortion at 17mm,

making it far from ideal for photographing architecture, except

perhaps Gaudi in Barcelona, or City Hall amd the ‘Gherkin’ in London.

And with its relatively slow maximum aperture, this is also not an ideal

lens for low light/indoor photography of people or other moving subjects.

- Also the lens is heavy breathing.

So if you have one of the mounts mentioned above and do not have enough

budget for a better zoom lens in that range like a RED PRO 18-85mm T2.8 or

Angénieux optimos, some Cookes, Zeiss, etc,... cine zoom lenses then you could

go for this Canon lens with a notion that you should know very well a good and a bad sides of the lens.

Couldn't you find better test?

Obviously it's not for everyone's taste.

Also it's not a test as usual,

it's a short and dirty one.

I have a "small" problem with this lens. I bought it 2 years ago in Tokyo (S/N: 22701314). I got it as a package with the 10-22 and EOS-30D. It was a perfect lens for all around traveling, and private, non-commercial jobs (for which I prefer to use my "L" glass). It complemented very well the 10-22, but this is the FIRST Canon lens that failed on me. About 6 months ago I started to get weird problems with auto-focus, which will on random basis just play back and forward few times before settling at nowhere near the focused position. That would not worry me much personally, as I tend to use it with manual focus. But my two trainee photographers have been using it quite a bit. Next up (about 3 months ago) we would start getting an error in the camera body when the lens was attached. I could not try it with the 1Ds, as the EF-S does not fit on it, but the 30D works fine with the 10-22 and other non "S" lenses. So the culprit had to be the lens. Then about a month ago the lens just died. No life from it what so ever. After speaking with Canon here in Mexico it was clear to me that getting it fixed would cost close to (if not more then) buying a new lens. So I took out the toolkit and took it apart. Could not find anything wrong with it. Put it back together and the lens sprang back to life. But the only problem now is that it appears to have a No.9 ND filter build in... :) The aperture is completely closed and it does not respond to anything. Photos taken on tripod are great (if the subject does not move), but unless I am about to shoot solar eclipse, or specialize in welding (not wedding) photography - it is pretty useless... I have some lenses for way over 5 years and they still work just fine. This is the first Canon lens that I have seen failed...

Anyone with similar problems?

Anyone with similar problems?

It might just be a mechanical problem. Have the eight gold contacts pushed into the lens at all?

If so, loosen the two screws holding that assembly to the bayonet, and retighten them putting some lateral pressure in the direction of the sensor plane. I have seen this happen on a couple of lenses.

Its not a perfect lens for that money you pay today and actyally it is discontinued by Canon.

They offer now another lens without a lens designer risks for that closer range:

Hi Sanjin,

What's the Follow focus you use? And how does it feel, in a focus puler point of view?

Thanks,
antoine.

BTW, Laboprod, for RED I'm not so good and advanced with a FF, MB , fluid head and tripod at the moment.

I know what I would get but not right know.

Again, btw, I hold a different business at the same time and would like to have a minimum risks.

Hope you would understand.

Erik,

anyway it is very useful and cheap lens for a general use.

Take it without a big expectation.

Peter,

you are right, it's a pretty weird sometimes.

All around it's a cheap lens for an average Canon user and also with all it's flaws in that way.

Hi Erik, I do appreciate You helping out - I would not dare to bother You about this... I tried this, but no difference. The lens is still really dark and I can see the iris (sextagon) closed to about 1 cm diameter...

I will be coming to the USA next month, so I will bring it with me and get it to You. I have no use for it as it is and You might be able to use it for some of Your experiments... :)

That is if You want it...

Thanks again and will send You a PM once the "big e-mail" is on its way to You later tonight regarding the "other" stuff... :nerd:

Thanks erik and Peter,

It's a nice to have you as a real and also a nice people in a tread I wanted to talk about.

Once more, thank you very much guys.

Also I appreciate very much that and also I would not like forget to mention our "mods"

"Offhollywood" and "Luki" for it's very well understanding and "to fast cut" a certain noise here.

the more you talk, the more..

let's forget it okay?.. i wish you all the best.. you're funny.. no more than this.. far away to be an evil guy at all.. macgregor's episode was only an episode.. feel free to be yourself.. everyone like you.

yes peter.. it's a great lens.. near by "L" quality too..

yet seriously.. sj.. i thought you'd post your findings on the new canon.. you said something related to..

still waiting.. it should be nice.. you have the patience for this type of exploring stuff yourself.. tom posted something negative.. others said: not so bad.. can you tell us about your own findings?.. it should be really interesting..

Sanjin - did You try the 10-22? That must be an absolute killer. I am definitely keeping this one to complete the "L" range... :)

Peter,

I did it and the test you can find here>>>
