  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

how do i get rid of the orange render bar in FCP?

Or get a Faster RAID system that can push the Referenced 4K files faster. (this is why people transcode to Pro res and use Crimson to Online) Crimson is cheaper than a Raid system, plus it saves on hundreds of hours of rendering Proxies that will be re-rendered and rendered again and again and again... then rendered twice more, and an additional render after lunch, then one over night. Filling up every disk you have with Render files, if you dont manage them.

This is #1 reason why people transcode to another codec, proxies suck... period

Well I should elaborate, proxies suck because they are references to 4K RAW files. THEY ARE REFERENCES. You must then accommodate for Editing with References, faster CPU, Faster Disk Array, more RAM, More Cooling.

Believe me, take your project and transcode using Log and Transfer or Red Rushes. you will have a much happier time editing. Its very simple, Red is no different in Post Production than other traditional workflows, It still uses an Offline / Online technique. Similar to 35mm to HDCAM SR or D5, are you seriously going to try and Edit a features worth of footage at UNCOMPRESSED? NO, you are going to ingest Pro-res or DV through Kona or Black Magic Card. Same thing here, ingest your Pro res and then Edit, worry about Online later.

why did it not need to be rendered before the update, and now it does? I'm too far into the edit to change now. i'm going to reinstall fcp and see if i can go back to how things before.

ok, solved it. cant get rid of orange bar, but it doesnt matter, i got rid of strobe-y playback (dropped frames) and will have to render before exporting.

go: SEQUENCE>SETTINGS>GENERAL>QUICKTIME VIDEO SETTINGS>COMPRESSOR>SWITCH TO APPLE PRORES 422 (HQ)

then

RT (in timeline)>playback video quality to low>playback frame rate to full

Yes! Only been working in FCP for 8 years and there's always something new to learn!

I did the same thing on an edit yesterday, works quite well.

Once in a while you just render and then can see high quality but doesn't slow you down when you just want to get on with it..

Thank's a lot for your post.
I was doing tests, all was good, then i get the strobe playback. 1 hour later I was still changing every prefs and settings that you can find. My frame rate was on "dynamic" instead of "full"

I have the orange bar but it is smooth. I can keep going with crimson.

Thank's a lot !!

I've been working on a feature for months that was completely edited with 2K proxies (on the recommendation of a Mr. Know-it-all post production supervisor who never worked on anything longer than a short on the RED). Talk about some HUGE render files gobbling up hard disk space!

Next time around, I'm going the Red Rushes route to create offline 2K ProRes files. Things start to get painfully slow after a while when you have huge project files. Especially when I have to do a bit of color and online work remotely on a MBP that doesn't have anywhere near the horsepower a Mac Pro has...

I've got a similar problem here trying to edit with _h and _m proxy files.

I can play the files on FCP, but without the Scrub High Quality option active I found the image scaled to this:

Image too big

And when I've got it active I get this image, but when a play the file it turns back to the scaled one.

Image too big too

You should always have the codec set to ProRes instead of Redcode, or you can have a full crash when rendering!

I have it in ProRes already. I think I've got the correct configuration.
Unlimited RT, Image quality low and frame rate full.

I have a MacPro with 2 Dual Core, 4GB of ram.

I just tried to edit my files on another mac computer and it worked well, but on my two Mac Pros I've got the same problem.
