Now we RED owners, can play back in camera 1080/1920...out the HDSDI .... cool.... what if I take the camera over to my friend who has a final cut system that digitizes HDSDI input? do I beat the rendering bugaboos and get instant footage in good looking HD on his drive...:cold: :cold: :cold: or
will it look totally stupid or not digitize.... intend to check it out next week anyone else done this.... we have an opportunity to shoot stuff that needs to be delivered by the evening of the shoot.... in HD.... or I can just rent another day on the
Panasonic/Sony HD cameras....

TJ,

The camera doesn't do in camera debayering. So the video output is comparable to the high proxie quicktime files. You must debayer the raw to see the full quality of your Red.

Still if you like how it looks then it sounds like you have a plan.

TJ, couple of things you got to know about this. Yes, it works.

But the output is cropped by 10% before scaling to achieve the 1920x1080. So keep that in mind for framing.

With the new build, audio will come down the HD-SDI output but with Build 16, that is not the case. You need to use analog out. And then there is the issue of timecode.

I have also noticed that colors can be a bit off, but haven't quite figured that out. The trick is that playback relies on your current settings, so whatever you currently have selected for white balance, that's what gets attached to the output. So you'd have to make sure you are careful with settings.

So, bottom line is, it's an option. But test it out and make sure it achieves what you need it to. I have used it. I capture through a Kona 3 into FCP.

Guys one question:

Is this HDSDI out much better than the HDMI out?

So the SDI crop the image by 10%... Always? How do you fram?

How do you judge the quality of this output? How far is from the real image quality recorded on the Card/RedDrive?

I was thinking to capture from this output just to playback on set after the end of the scene...

Thanks

G

de-bayer ?

Well actually yes it does. On playback it debayers and scales 2:1, then crops the resulting 2K RGB internal signal to create 1080p RGB and 1080p 4:2:2 outputs on HD-SDI.
