  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey, there. We are getting incredibly long exports using RED Rushes and I have a feeling it's due to us having our footage on an XRaid. (not sure yet...)

Does anyone have any export times they want to share as benchmarks? What kind of speeds are you getting with what system?

We have an Intel Mac with 4 Gigs RAM working off of the XRaid and exporting to our local desktop. For just a couple hours of footage it is taking all night and into the next day. Crazy long times. Something is wrong...

We're using standard settings that I think most people are using: half high rez, Prerez High Quality, resizing to 1920 x 1080...all other settings default.

Thanks for any help...

Kevin

For about 160GB of footage, it took about 48hrs of pure rendering time. I would assume 320GB is about 96hrs. Full debayer, ProRes 422 HQ, 1920x1080 and all standard settings on a Mac Pro 8-core 2.8Ghz, 10GB of RAM.

Yikes, that is as horrible as my times. I'm sure you would get much quicker results (comparitively) if you used Half High rather than Full Debayer. But still, that is painful.

Anyone else have times like these? I hope the speeds increase big time with B17 and more tweaks to the Rushes app.

Thanks!

Kevin

If you choose full debayer you should expect long render times because it's very processor intensive. If you've got a 2k or HD deliverable, you should instead use half high or half standard.

half standard is the fastest to get 2k from 4k and is good for many things.
it's a tad bit more aliasy but some people like it more because it's perceptually a bit sharper than half high. It renders at 3:1 on my 8core.

Use half high to get very close in quality to doing a full debayer and a scale down to 2k but with much less render time.

isnt it possible to integrate in RR the feature:

render 4k stuff with a half debayer but 2k stuff with a full debayer?-2k with half debayer doesnt look good

I think the long render times are normal...:)

we did 4k 16.9 - to prorez 1080 max quality...

1- 15. (1mintue footage took 15min.) this was stable for 1 hours worth of footage.

octo-core 3.2, 16gigs ram...

best,

Sid

Just to update and continue my questioning of this SLOW process:

We are getting more than 6x - 8x real time using what should be the fast settings in RED Rushes. (Half Res Standard, Look Source, ProrezHD, Resize 1920 x 1080) I don't understand why it's taking all night long to do a couple hours of shot footage.

Deanan-Are we sure the app isn't shutting down in screensaver mode? It is for us. Everytime it comes on, the app seems to stop...not good for overnight stuff.

We don't have the fastest machine, but I surely we shouldn't be seeing such a dramatic slowdown, should we? We have the Intel x x 2.66 Dual-Core Xeon with 5 GB RAM.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Kevin

Do REDAlert/REDRushes and REDCine use all available processors in the Mac? I.e. would it be really worth it going for an 8 core for rendering?

Cheers

Is your Local desktop Only a single hdd?

That Could be slowing you up. I would write bak out to your Xraid, But do you have like an esata drive that is pretty fast? like some kind of external RAID Esata?
