  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How long is the battery plate cable?

I've been here before with straight and cross-wired cables and connectors. I need to get my mind around it again, do some tests with a VOM and I'll report back.

I absolutely hear what Geoff is saying that his straight gender-changer works fine.

Geesh... All I want to do is to use my existing power extension cable and power the camera from a distance.

Hi David,

Good job following up on this.

But if it's wired straight, wouldn't the pins still line up correctly? It's not like it's a mirror image or something, it's just extending what's already there, left to left etc?

Or am I missing something?

Cheers,

Jim

Jim or anyone Sydney based,

If you still need to remotely power Red One, or/and 4-pin XLR conversion cables, extensions, let me know. Plenty of this sort of stuff in my accessory case. Also Origo Rec/Stop with 10m cable available. Send me an email.

Hi David,

Any news on this front? I still think the gender changer is the simplest solution if it works, rather than buying parts and jumping in with old soldering iron!

Also, I'm going to be in the U.S. in a couple of weeks and could maybe have one delivered locally if we figure this out in time.

Cheers,

Jim

Geoff and all,

I was able to talk with a very helpful Stephen Lassen at LEMO USA today.

Stephen suggested that the RGG.2B 306CLM gender changer is wired straight so that the pinouts would be reversed on the far side of the gender changer.

He instead recommended buying two LEMO PHG.2B.306.CLLD82 and making up a cross wired short length of cable using up to 20g wire.

The LEMO search page is at: http://www.lemo.com/search/partnum_search.jsp

I'll probably go this route but it is interesting to consider that Geoff is using the straight wired connector/gender changer successfully. I'm just a bit confused by that but that's OK, I'm confused by one thing or another most of the time anyway.

It would also be possible to make a small box with panel mount receptacles rather than the short cable. ODU also carries LEMO mating parts.

I'd be great if someone would post how much they'd charge for 2 of these, i'd love to be able to use both cables that came with my chargers, so I'd have a longer distance.

I really don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal about this.

I already gave out the contact details of the guy in Lemo(UK) who you can order gender changers from. They hardly cost anything and the shipping won't be much either.

I really don't understand why this thread is still going.

??

The reason why it's still going is because some retailers have been kind enough to cater to RED One users and make us lazy by posting all kinds of info here on REDUser along with pictures. You mean you want me to have to actually leave the forum in order to find out info about ordering this part :) I'll give them a call!

Sorry to have been off the case.

I wrote to LEMO US today with the part number and a detailed description of our needs. Dennis Warren promptly returned the following:

Hello David,

The couplers are not normally stocked items. I recommend re-terminating
your 6 foot cable with a PHG.2B.306.CLLD62.

If you wish to consider the coupler route, a valid part number for a
coupler is RJG.2B.306.CLA.
This will accept the standard FGG.2B.306.CLAD62 on one side of the coupler,
but it requires a reverse gender plug
on the other side, FGJ.2B.306.CLLD62.

Our local LEMO REP in your area is West Electronic Sales, 714 465 3720.

Regards,
Dennis Warren

That's where it stands at the moment. I'm writing to explain why it is not desirable to re-terminate. The LEMO part search page again is:

I think geoff tompkinson's man in the UK sounds like a perfect answer but am interested now to understand why LEMO USA seems to have a different approach to what seems to be such a simple problem.

I ordered and received the simple coupler RGG.2B.306.CLM from LEMO UK sales for £34.16 each excluding £5.50 next day delivery and VAT.

From the online LEMO part number search facility:
http://intra.lemo.ch/WD140AWP/WD140Awp.exe/CONNECT/PartSearch?p1=partNumber

the correct component is:
http://intra.lemo.ch/WD140AWP/WD140...D_ACTION_=REFRESH&PartDisplay=PartDisplay.htm

I have buzzed out with a continuity tester, and bearing in mind that it is effectively two FEMALE 6 way LEMO sockets back to back in a single rigid cylinder, assuming a numbering of pins 1 to 5 anticlockwise from the key indent, and centre pin 6 as you look into the sockets, all the pins are wired 1 to 1. Ie. Pin 1 on one socket goes to Pin 1 of the other socket, Pin 2 to Pin 2,...,Pin 5 to Pin 5, Pin 6 to Pin 6. This is as expected for a coupler. Although this is technically not a "barrel" coupler connector or inline gender changer - it looks like it's designed as a bulkhead connector for fixed installations - it serves the same function.

Can back up Geoff Tompkinson in that it works fine with the RED DC Power Cable (10 FT) (http://www.red.com/store/140-0040) normally used to power the camera from a RED charger to extend a RED battery plate cable and/or the mains AC Power Adaptor (http://www.red.com/store/645-0017).

However, as Geoff said above, you will not get battery power information from the battery plate - this is because the cables used for the RED DC power accessories, except for the battery plates, is only 4 core, and only the power pins 1 to 4 in the 6-way LEMO connectors are actually wired. If you want battery information, and automatic shutdown, you'll have to make up your own male-female extension cable with suitably current rated 6 core cables, one FGG.2B.306.CLLD.xx.Z LEMO free cable plug and a PHG.2B.306.CLLD.xx.Z LEMO free cable socket (where xx is a cable diameter code, and Z specifies a cable relief collet nut needing a separately ordered cable relief, or no Z indicating a plain collet nut).

Hey guys, slightly OT here. I mashed one end of the charger-to-camera cable and need to replace the end. Do you happen to have the part number floating around?
Thanks, Tehben

If you're talking about the RED DC Power Cable (10 FT) (http://www.red.com/store/140-0040) then the cable connectors are:
LEMO FGG.2B.306.CLAD82Z

or possibly LEMO FGG.2B.306.CLAD92Z for thicker cable.

The strain relief will be GMA.2B.080.DN where the 080 refers to cable diameters 7.8 to 8.8 mm, and N stands for Black, assuming you want black stain reliefs. Leave off the Z if you just want a collet nut without strain relief.

This PDF has fuller information:
http://intra.lemo.ch/catalog/ROW/UK_English/unipole_multipole.pdf

[EDIT: cable diameters increased after measuring my cables!]

Glad to help - don't think there's any price difference, so you might want to get the right one in case other parts get damaged, or it may be possible to just order the shell?
