So beta build 17 has 4k HD mode, which as I understand it means at half res you have 1080p footage. So my question is this is good because.....
the proxy file is natively 1080p?
or that when you render down to 1080p using redrushes the computer doesn't have to work as hard so render times are faster?
or is there another benefit I am missing?

i believe you hit it right on the head :) if you know you're final output is 1080 i'd imagine this is a great new feature.

Both.
_H QT wrappers fall perfectly to 1920x1080
Half resolution debayers fall stright to 1920x1080 which means no additional scaling is needed and no funky scale factors to go from 2048 to 1920 which reduce sharpness a bit.

Also, 4k HD is similar in data rate to 4k 2:1 instead of the higher data rates of 4k 16:9.

how much (back of the envelope percentage) faster is half res debayer of 4k HD vs the way things work in build 16 with 4k 16X9?

I haven't done any real tests yet but I would guess it might about around 10% but that would depend on the footage involved a bit.

This is actually a pretty exciting new mode for those of us working in HD land. A cleaner, more efficient downscaling is great news. Can't upgrade to Build 17 yet, but looking forward to this new feature.

I wonder if they'll offer a 3k HD mode too for us guys that are shooting Super16 style with S16 lenses?

Can 4K HD be recorded to the 8GB CF with RC36? (The manual says no and I haven't upgraded yet to test it.)

Has anybody tried the 300mm Canon on the red with a PL adpt. , I'v used this lens for spr16mm for years. What can it cover 4k ? 2k?

Isn't this just the same as a 50% resize and crop to 1080p though? It would be cleaner than normal if it still somehow used the whole sensor but technically it's not doing much different, it's just information (6%?) being thrown away around the edges no?

Editing or converting a 1080p reference file should be convenient on many jobs and lesser machines than previous being able to play the footage out to tape from raw because it takes less processing power won't hurt either :).

Sure?!? As it does 4K 2:1 RC36 up to 25 fps I find that hard to believe...

It threw me out a bit when I first went to give it a try, I assumed 4K HD would be similar to 4K 2:1 in this regard. But alas, every time I try 4K HD to CF at RC36 it comes up with invalid settings. Bring on the 16GB cards I guess!

I'd like to see a side by side of 4KHD downscaled to 1080p and original Red4K downscaled to 1080p. So I can see if it really looks better - hard to believe.

I just can't bring myself to shoot less pixels, it goes against my religion.

Yes. I've used the 300mm canon adapted for PL and it works great and covers 4k. Any 35mm lens will work with the red.
