Evin:

Do the Nikon ZFs focus normal or Nikon (reverse normal) direction. Wondering if you bought one of these for use as a manual on the Birger or Alesniak EFs if it would be better to buy Nikon and use an adapter or the new direct ZE (EOS) version. Nikon would allow use on either Nikon or Canon with adapter.

The ZF's focus noncinewise. The Contax/Zeiss version of the 21mm did focus cinewise.

Hi Chuck,

Sorry for my ignorance on this one, but I take that the Contax/Zeiss lenses are no longer sold new... so where would one look to put together a set of used ones?

Thank you in advance.

Lots of Zeiss/Contax lenses on ebay. Type in contax lenses. The 21's are very pricy running between 2-3K for a clean one. The one thing about these and other focal lengths made for the Contax cameras is that most all focus cinewise though this is not so critical if your follow focus device is reversable. There were some very fine lenses made in this line like the 21 and the 17-35 zoom and one of my favorites is the the 200mm f2 APO Sonnar which when combinded with the 1.4x and the 2x Zeiss Mutar extenders gives you a 200 f2, 280 f2.8 and a 400mm f4 alll in one case. If the new 21 is as good or better then the older model it is going to be one of the finest lenses ever made even if it does focus in reverse.

One other thing is that you can mount a Contax to Canon adapter on these early lenses so that you can use them on your still camera too.

I have a 50 1.4, 85 1.4 and 25 2.8 that I will be selling fairly soon. I have been using them on a birger Canon eos mount in manual or "dumb" mode since January with excellent results. I also have a 300mm but will probably keep it for awhile.

I am not sure if I should get this or the 18mm but 2.8 is what is making me lean towards this lens. It should not cost more then the 18mm...maybe less?

re: why selling c/y lenses

re: why selling c/y lenses

Can we know why?

I bought them when I had the original Birger mount that could only be controlled via an external computer so I mostly used it as a dumb mount with the C/Y lenses - with great success (km9000 shot his whole feature with them).

However, I am pretty comfortable with my Birger setup now - on board iris already and soon will have iris and focus knobs. I have the 10-22 EF-S 17-55 and 70 200 L series zoom so I have the focal length ranges covered with excellent glass.

I am keeping one of the two 50 f1.4s I have as a superspeed and manual backup lens (I already had one when I bought a camera package with another 50 and the 85). And I will keep the 300 for now (although I would consider selling it as well) since I only go to 200 right now with EF and I have a contax doubler as well so can go to 600.

Another reason for keeping the 300 is I have a friend that does conversions and the 300 would be pretty easy to convert to pl mount.
