Anyone heard about possible Dolby's buyout of FCP?

Someone who attended IBC talks about it.

This is the only job posting on their site that could be possibly related. If they are about to buy FCP from Apple, I would think they would be looking for a lot of support and sales people as well as software integration engineers.

Decent theory though. I personally think Apple is going to sell their Pro Apps.

Wow, good investigation. The reason why Dolby want to buy it is the recent invasion of Indian company on sound format in cinema, so Dolby needs visual department to expand.

someone told me abouyt "the sale" of FCP division a few months ago.
it was from someone on the AVID side of things so i really did not put too much into it.........and the tlot phikens........

Recently some key workers in charge of Proapps at Apple Japan got transferred to totally different divisions. Also, the discontinuation of Xserve RAID (they switched to OEM), and Proapps being not exposed in the front page of the web, I would prepare for some change in the business and strategy.

Imho, Apple can't sell FCS to Dolby.
It's the last reason to buy a MacPro tower...

I wouldn't necessarily say that. I know plenty of Avid editors that work on Mac Pros. Not to mention, most sound design suites I've been to run Pro Tools on Mac workstations...

Look at what apple has been up to te last couple of years: First, FCP hasn´t had a major upgrade for years. We are still on the same codebase as of os9. Shure, we got some nice features but nothing major. But we got Motion, Soundtrack Pro, (LiveType), all made from scratch for osx. I think apple has been hard at work on FCP and used the base of Motion and SoundtrackPro to give us a new FCP that will use all the techniques of those two apps plus more. Shake wasn´t bought for nothing, either was Emagics Logic. So why is nothing happening.... I think they won´t realese a new FCP without going thru extensive bugfixing. Motion and STP have had some issues but they were brand new apps, so bugs are more ok. But a brand new FCP can´t have any bugs when it´s out the door, so they work hard on it. Plus Apple didn´t go to NAB 2008 because FCP 7 wasn´t ready. Next year might be different. BIG... FCS 3!!! Go Apple!!

My guess for NAB 2009:
Brand new FCP, built using alot of Motion, STP, shake, CinemaTools and color. Realtime everything... or alot...
Updated Motion with depth of field and more.
Updated STP with more integration of FCP and logic. 7.1 surround?
Shake successor for real compositing...
DVD Studio Pro for BluRay and QuickTime with Menus like Divx.
A new Compressor that will integrate better.
Maybe something more?

Maybe the shifts in the Pro Apps team are because they are finished with the big update?
:usd:

I hope Apple keeps at least the important pro apps and continue developing both software and computers together.

I hope they don't drop the Pro Apps. That would seriously suck.

The only reason I came back to Mac was because of FCP. When Avid made the switch in the 90's to PC, I was perfectly happy jumping ship to what was really a much better platform at the time. And later when I began working on the Discreet Smoke - man, not a single complaint here w/respect to the SGI platform... Frigen screamers :excl: And now, I split my time on Avid DS Nitris running on the HP and FCStudio running on a Mac Pro and my personal MBP. If tomorrow Mac got rid of it's pro apps., and certainly whoever buys them would likely port them over to PC, I'm not so sure I'd stay w/Mac... And certainly the premium price makes you think twice.

Personally, I think that Apple is working on an all-in one editing compositing program which will surplant all their pro-apps (with the possible exception of logic from which they will just continue to steal audio technology from. Logic has always been on it's own and a good source for garage band.)

This will be the FCP/AE/Shake/Motion combo tool which might even give Photoshop a run.

At that point I think the real concern will be Adobe's support of Apple. I think, Apple may not take on Photoshop/Illustrator/Flash simply to keep Adobe on the Mac.

Speculation speculation, but the chances of Apple dropping FCP at this point - unlikely.

Has apple ever created it's own software?

FCP ...macromedia
Shake ...Nothing Real
Motion....Silicon Grail
Logic...Emagic

they are more in the business of buying cutting edge software than developing it...for them to pull off an all in one compositer/editor/ photoshop killer that will drive adobe, avid, nuke and fusion out of business is a bit of a stretch....start with blu ray burning first

don't get me wrong it would be cool....i just don't see it in apple's past

Wow...nice bet.
See you in Vegas next year...cheers

By the way guys...any rumors about new book pro....sorry the out topic
but i couldnt wait to ask...

I wonder what will happen to the rumored Shake successor. Or is it truly the end of the line for Shake?

got cancelled in june 2006....

I don't know any software company that cancells a product without a replacement in the wings....were talking 2 years

in the meantime technology has changed and most of the user base is switching to nuke, they could have got more life out of shake....it was hugely popular and a good compositer...i'm sure a lot of studios are still using it even without an update in 2 years.

but by not supporting it....even barely, and letting someone else steal your market share seems like you just don't care.

We heard rumors of "Phenomenon" right after Apple killed Shake in 06 but i nor anyone I know has heard a thing since. Supposedly, its Apple's replacement to Shake but I don't know if its still being developed or not. Honestly, and I hate to say this, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Apple pulls the plug on the small Pro Apps devision and sells FCP. I wouldn't be angry about it either if it was regularly updated and improved along with freed from Quicktime only.
However, Apple being Apple could just be dragging their feet and taking their time making a kick ass FCP3 with Phenomenon and more that could floor everybody here. Now that they have released the iPhone 3G maybe more time will be spent on developing pro apps software tools that are hopefully awesome and less buggy!

there could be a Phenomenon coming....

one other thought though, if they did want to phase out Final Cut, would it be wise to make it public....since it definately didn't help shake's sales.

if they gave it minimal resources, and banked on the mac users loyalty... they could probably get good life out of it.....
