Hi guys,

In a couple of weeks, my team is going to be using a RED ONE to film some green screen clips for an interactive film project. The director is requesting we have a live-keyed feed for him and the clients to view live on set to make sure everyone's happy.

I've done various bits of post production work in the past (keying/compositing/etc), but have never been on a live shoot and I was wondering if anyone could offer any tips on how to set up a live workflow using the RED ONE (including basic live keying). I'm currently using a Mac Pro (OSX 10.5) with Final Cut Studio 2 and Shake, but if any other software is needed, I'm happy to buy it in provided it'll do the job.

I'm quite a newbie to the whole process and haven't used a RED before, so suffice to say the more detailed the suggestions the better!

Many thanks in advance,

Costas

Costas,

We have used Conduit live on set with Red. You will need some sort of I/O to feed Conduit live. There are tutorials on the dvgarage website. Keep in mind that you are at the mercy of the HD-SDI feed coming from the Red. It may be more effective if you were to also render some quick files out of RA or RC and import into your favorite keyer. FYI, conduit is also a plug-in for motion and can give you a quick graphics accelerated look at your key. Motion will import tiff sequences if you have the room. One of many choices.

One more vote for Conduit Live...

I have done this for tons of 35mm shoots and a good key was never the issue. Yes everyone wants a good key but you can use a standard switcher and pull a key that allows you to do a quick comp to make sure your camera angle matches and you lighting matches the background plate. Arri cameras have such a crappy video signal sometimes I had to just do a half dissolve or a wipe to show the relationship. We are lucky with our red cameras that we will have a good signal but I promise they want immediate feedback. This is not a time to render stuff out of ra or rc. This is a time to use a switcher and your comp will be good enough. I do know that blackmagic and kona can do this live for you and kona seems like a smart bet to me. But a simple switcher won't cost too much for a rental. For sd (yes you need to downconvert) it should not cost more than $100/day. Don't know prices on hd but I bet they are quite a bit more.

Oh well posted this on an iPhone and can't proof it so it is what it is

Scott is correct. I did the same exact thing a few years ago on a Varicam shoot with Dolly Parton. We did an AJA downconverter to a small panasonic mixer that had a live keyer. We were trying to match up Dolly so she would fit correctly in the car with Elvis (we were putting her over the original actress from a movie clip.)

You could do it with our advanced video assist - DiVA HD. In it's composite module there is realtime blue/greenscreen keyer. You can key live over recorded or any other combination of 2 layers.

DiVA software is running on MacPro with AJA/Blackmagic video card providing full screen, low-cost DVI client/director monitoring (no need to convert signal or use expensive HD-SDI monitors).

Looks nice. Price?

There are various configurations of software packages:
$20k for DiVA HDx2 (full featured, dual hd input)
$10k for DiVA HDx1 (single hd camera, all features)
$5k for DiVA HDx1Lite (single hd, less features)

I will post final configs and pricelist to the site in about 2 weeks.
Until then you can request a demo.

If that's for the software only then I'm afraid it's a bit steep.

Depends on what you do. This is the most advanced video assist system we use for commercial work, renting it for $500 per day (including $20k hw and operator).

If you do independent stuff, then there is a lot of less-featured, low-priced options.

Thanks guys, everyone's been really helpful. We've ended up ordering a Kona 3 card and are going feed the RED through that, using Conduit Live to do a live key. As for Conduit, we've only done tests with a DV cam so far (firewire input) but am very impressed with the results already!

I'll let you know how it goes :)
