  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hot Mirror/IRND/Mirror ND Filter Matrix [Parts 1-4]

$780... Ouch. Seeing how I haven't bought the 6x6 mattebox yet, I'll hold off a bit. But there's no such filter I can rent here in town, I may just have to suck it up and buy one. :(

You will all want to check out the Formatt Filters IRND's as well.

Evan,
Just wanted to thank you for this test and the other tests you have done. Extremely professional in approach and damn nice of you to share.

Hi all, i have been using the tiffen hot mirror and just saw my first case of ghosting/ double reflection on my shoot yesterday. in the end i had to take the filter out and shoot without it.

my q is, if i dont use any IR/ hot mirror filters for all my shoots, will it cause damage to the cam's sensor in the long run?

I have been changing my lenses in bright hot sunlight while the camera is still on, will that affect the sensor as well? or do i hav to shield the mount area from light when i swap lenses?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello. Just joined. I'm prepping for a movie that production has decided would be best shot on Red. I'm new to Red and have only shot one commercial on it. I'm deeply concerned about use of the IR filters. I will be shooting a lot of day exteriors with a lot of ND being used. My concerns are Shooting wide lens shots with IR filters. I heard mention of color distortion on wider than 32mm lens's. Also use of IR filters with Tungsten lighting. I already own a lot of filters, ND's , Pola's grads. What would you recommend to complete this set?
Should I fly an IR all the time?
Can I use ND 1.2 grads over an IR?
Can a pola effect the IR filter?
Also any idea where I can see tests of a large screen blow up of Red footage? Thanks, sorry for all the questions but I'm just getting started.
One last question, if the camera is really a Daylight balanced camera all the time, is it better to color correct on the lens like film or should I do it in Post?

The work you have done is really helpful and I first of all , want to thank everybody involve in it. I´m a director , producer, salesman, of a post production company in Chile, www.imaginachile.com, and I´m flying to LA. to attendt a red day. During this trip i want to buy a tripod , mattebox, follow focus and filters. I have spend time in the web looking for red one accesories companies and gone through this forum all the time , and my best option , in my ignorance , it seems to be abelcine. They are selling me a package with tripod, matte box , follow focus and filters for 21.000 dollars with tax. Do you think is my best option. Is there a cheaper one with the same quality.
Finally I would like to ask , after reading your work about filters, if the package of filters they sell me for I believe 950 dollars plus tax is my best option , or should I maybe expend a litlle more money and get the ones that will work best with the camera. Also i ´ll probably write again in this forum to ask if the package of filters that abelcine is selling me is enough or should i get other ones too. I´m just waiting for an email from abelcine where it will be specified the content of the package.
Thanks in advance for your response
bye.

Yes, I got bit my the reflection issue this past weekend using the Pancro. But I don't think it was entirely the filters fault. I believe I had some light leak with the RR mattebox which I have to make sure to check and seal if need be next time. Also, in one instance I had switched to a lens that had a screw-in UV filter attached and well...not a good idea. So, I guess the point is when using these filters to pay special attention that the mattebox is not susceptible to light leaking in, use as few filters behind the IR or IR/ND filters as possible, and don't be a goof like me and leave a screw-in filter attached to a lens when you've got the IRs in the mattebox.

Hey guys, by the way we have a great article on our site featuring Pawel Achtel. It has some great info on IRND filters and their application/suggested use for Red. If you plan on using PANCRO IR+ND's now or in the future it is a must read regarding commonly held veiws in relation to IRND filter use and IR contamination-Check it out if you get a chance! Thanks!! http://pancro.com/#/mythbusters/4532015074

Tell them to send me a set and I'll test them.

I was looking at your demo reel. Really nice. And I loved how you did the flash strobes for the "all I need Video" and the Koi spot. I was like "Hey, those didn't have rolling shutter effect!. Let me watch it frame by frame..." :-) Really nicely done.

Now back to the thread. Yes, it would be nice to se areview on those.

Evin,
Thank you or all of your tests. They have really made a difference in how I approach lenses, filtration and really appreciating what the Red One can do. The value and performance of the Rosco TruColor has not been lost on me. Your tests bear that out. Art Adams did a series of tests on IR filters last summer at Provideo Coalition. That said, I have had 2 sizes of filters, 4x5.6 and 4x4 that I bought through the Rosco special intro price that Mike Moreland graciously brokered last summer. The key word is had. These filters are very delicate. Handle with extreme care!
The 4x5.6 broke at an event last fall, the carrier slipped through the bottom of the mattebox slot and the filter snapped literally in half on a carpeted floor, the carrier fine. Hmm. My fault. The height of the the fall was 5 feet. Did I say it was my fault? Yes I did, lesson learned. Keep them mattebox filter carrier screws tighter!
Last week while prepping for a rental I, I updated the label on the nice padded Rosco pouch that the 4x4 came in. I finished, secured the velcro flap, and gave the filter in it's case a short toss, 2 feet, into an empty void in the foam lined Pelican 1690 case that I ship the camera in. I was on an apple box, the Pelican case on the floor beside me. The pouch went in to one of the pick and pluck voids and landed fine. It sounded a little strange on landing though. I reached in, pulled the pouch out. Upon opening the pouch, I was dismayed that 3 pieces of jagged glass came out when moments before I had just placed one perfectly square piece. Lesson learned. Again. Get softer foam.
In Rosco's defense, these were part of the first production run. Was the glass too brittle in these first runs? I do not know. The 4x4 lasted 8 months kept with other filters. Used it in tests and on shoots, handling with extra care. Anyone else have these issues?
I have broken a filter once before. Seven feet to concrete. Tiffen Pola shattered. I've had one chip from flying metal in a factory shop. (whew, saved that lens). One from some sort of solvent that splashed on the filter at a pet salon(wtf). That is about it in 28 years of shooting.
The Roscos work, they are priced moderately, and they are delicate. Take extra, extra care when handling and when putting away. They are also delicate to clean.
Sorry for the long winded account. I'll order another one today.

Sincerely,
Paul J. Hickey
