  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Europe Users Meeting

Who is doubting your abilities? I hope my--apparently useless--referral to the association was not taken as an advice to you to do so, because it certainly wasn't meant that way. I was referring to the--seemingly--same issue with another camera, and panasonic's advice about it. Your credentials are certainly better than my own

The two companies involved in the 'french' screening are www.locared.com for the Red cameras and on site DITs; and www.sysmicfilms.com for the Scratch post-production including the film transfer using the Cinevator process.

All our contact info is on the websites.

Thanks again to all of you for coming to the event; and Maarten did an amazing job at pulling this event off, he deserves great praises.

Regards,

Thanks you to Maarten for organizing this, and to all the participants !

It was an informative event. Nice to have some open discussions, feedback and critisms from professional users, and to see some images. The HD projection certainly was not impressive, their were some questions about the quality of the projector itself. The footage brought by Arno, transfered to 35mm in 2K with the Cinevator solution was most impressive.

Some usefull feedback from the Technicolor representative. I'll add to what has beed said before, they also had some problems with the Sinc filters when downscaling, so the recommendation was to output (from Scratch) at full 4K resolution.

The discussion around metering, kind of went in circles, from my point of view. What I understood from Bastian (the dutch DoP) was that he felt he couldn't rely solely on his traditional meter, and used the on camera meters ALSO. I quite agree. To my eye there were a lot of problems in highlights with his images, particularly on the HD projection, but also on the film projection. My impression was his material was a little overexposed. The stuff I liked from him, were the high contrast scenes from his doc on Blacksmiths. However, I didn't quite understand the last shot where the outside lights were way blown out, was that the original material before grading or how he wanted it to look. I much prefered the toned down version.

There was also a short film shown on 35mm which went through a non-scratch workflow, it was recorded to HDcam (not SR I believe), then output to film. Although the film was entertaining, for some, the picture quality was mediocre at best. Going through HDcam is an odd choice in my opinion.

I'll post somewhere else a few words and pics from what I saw at IBC.

Cheers,
Damien

Hi Damien,

The material you saw from the blacksmith was uncorrected material, just to show you can't only use the 'traffic light' meter. In situation like this it will light up, if you stop down to switch off the traffic lights you will be in trouble with you dark areas.
It was my intention to blow out the windows, I got some lights and screens standing there….. My exposure was set to keep the fire in and keep the details in then dark areas. The projector was not giving a very good and subtle highlights, as I showed with the clouds all detail in highlight areas were gone, therefor you might have had the feeling of over exposing. If that happens I do it on purpose.

I just got back to Scotland after IBC. I got my Red One 4 days before that so I hadn't had much experience with it.

The Red Event was great. What I learned at first was just how much I had to learn. But then afterwards, talking to Bastiaan and Ted, things started to fall into place. Now I'm back with a much greater understanding. So for me totally worthwhile and a great event.

Thanks to Maarten and everyone.
