  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Sandisk 32Gb CF cards working with RED ONE?

Like you, I have my doubts. But I wonder if when cards start catching up to RED's speed if they will need the module upgrade or if they will work on the current one?

even if if red themselves said this card would work with red one, i would be skeptical. it's an extreme iii with a max rate of 30 mb/sec. too slow for any 4k i've ever shot.

The Extreme IV's arn't even fast enough... so the Extreme III's wont even come close...

another rumor from the good old mill :)

What about Lexar? The 8GB was enough and the 16GB is coming soon... And while we're at it - what about the RED 16GB? What happened with it???

speaking of cards, whats the word on 16 gigers, still waitng on hardware? oops. Sander beat me too the punch, by about an hour

Engadget does not say the memory will work with Red, they just state:
"if you're shooting high-speed RAW images or filming an HD masterpiece, we bet your ears just perked up"
For a lot of people, HDV is also HD. I think they just meant it as a matter of speech.

They modified the post. Originally they said "or filming a masterpiece with your Red camera".

Having tested multiple CF Card manufacturers cards using XBENCH I have found varying results. CF cards tested were the Sandisk Extreme Ducati 45MB/s series 4GB & 8GB & Extreme IV 4,8 & 16GB 45MB/s CF cards and 8GB Transcend UDMA 300x 45/Mbs CF cards (Sandisk rebranded & an alleged 300x UDMA 32GB that was much slower than 30MBps, I have found none to be adequate "out of the box" to match the need for speed of the RED that I borrowed from someone for testing. Although on XBENCH some were actually performing faster than the RED or LEXAR media which the RED found okay...

That said I have also tested varying results from Lexar branded media (more expensive than Sandisk here in HK) with some okay and others from the same shop much slower. These are all from high end photography shops here in Hong Kong. I tested the slow Lexar and other brand cards in someone else's RED here in HK afterwards and they all came up as SLOW MEDIA.

The good news is that the 4GB Ducati's cost me USD $49.00 each
The 16GB Extreme IV's cost me USD $165.00 each
The 32GB cost me USD $250.00 but is VERY SLOW against the other cards

This is still good news in this for me as the dp or director can walk away with a CF card in their pocket for daily review or a quick grade that may not work on a Red but is still okay for use in their computer and no risk to my RED CF cards of lost or broken media.

In the end, it is not worth the price to not use the correct media...

Than whats the speed the RED requires?
because if you can shoot 6 min. on 8 GB then its only 22,2 MB/s....
So the Extreme VI and for example the much cheaper Kingston 16GB ultimate
(40 MB/s write and 45 MB/s read for € 139,-) should be fast enough to handle the 4K format. I think the problem is not in the speed but inn the RED software...
I hope someone can find a way to make this work, I will be trying to ;)
