Leica Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8 on RED with IMS a short test + 2K video.

One more extraordinary still photo lens on my RED with IMS.

What can I say?

Amazing!!!

I'm really happy to have IMS on my RED.

Also enjoy a short 2K video here>>>

Leica is nice but ... Sanjin, please use the bubble level on your tripod!

The purpose that I'm not using the exact bubble level on my tripod is that because you actually cannot use any of my tests in 2K.

If you want to use you must crop and turn all video by one or two degrees.

But that's a lot of work...

The original 2K video picture is always leaning something like a Leaning Tower of Pisa :) .

Sorry because of that and hope you and everyone have got it now what it is about.

I've always really liked the R 24/2.8 but many of the die hard Leica users consider it some how inferior because it's a Minolta design rather than a German or Canadian Leica designed lens. It is certainly an old lens design but it renders a very nice image. I wish I could use it on my Canon 1dsmk2 but the rear of the lens won't clear the mirror, bummer!

John,

you are right, the Leica fans don't like it so much.

But for me it is a gorgeous (splendidly or showily brilliant or magnificent) lens on RED.

Just to compare Leica and Nikon on RED:

Sanjin, I had problems with the white text reflecting light onto the inside of the filter surface and therfore causing flare. This would happen when I was shooting car interiors which are often black, but with relatively bright light streaming through the windows. I solved the problem by covering the white text with matt black tape. See below.

Hi Sanjin,

It looks a bit soft at the edges in the 2k clip ... Could you post some 4k stills? big high quality jpegs would be fine. Also some info as to what stop you were at.

John thanks.

Good idea.

Matt,

Leica Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8 is not one of the best Leica's lenses at all or even it is an opposite.

I know that well but for my point of view is quite good for 2K size and look.

In 4K is acceptable if you could nail the focus properly.

Here I'm talking about a sort of general wide panorama shots.

All shots at the 2K video sample were done at f/5.6 except for the beginnig of the first when it started at f/8 and I changed at f/5.6 that you can see at the video.

Also all shots were processed at 320 ASA except the last one that was 400 ASA.

Here below is 4K jpg of the last shot.

More fun with tests of

Leica Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8
Leica Summicron-R 35mm f/2.0
Leica Summicron-R 50mm f/2.0
Leica Summilux-R 50mm f/1.4

Leica Summicron-M 90mm f/2.0
Voigtländer Ultra Wide Heliar 12 mm f/5.6 Aspherical Lens Leica-M mount

are all coming up soon.

Hi Sanjin,

The biggest difference i see in Leica/Nikon comparo is not about image quality.
The Leica's iris is very certainly more open than the Nikon even if both lenses read f5.6.

I think i prefer the color rendition of the Nikon even if the image is a little too dark in thi particular frame.
The Nikon 17-35 is a @#@# of a good lense.

thanks for sharing

Actually I attributed this to that fact that he was shooting as the sun was setting, therefore he was loosing light fast. So the difference is actually in the available light decreasing, not the iris of the lenses. Maybe Sanjin could comment to clear this up.

I'm not sure... Are you saying that you are intentionally setting up your tripod off-level, when you're out shooting -- and the reason is to hinder internet pirates from using your footage in their own projects?

Interesting.

Sounds likely. I'll say that I think the Nikon shot looks better exposed.

Antoine,

Nikkors are good zooms, not always the best but Nikon primes cannot be as good as Leica Primes.

1. Leica always has a better color rendition that makes Leica different from others for a century almost. That's a main reason Panavision took it for Primo L series.

2. Mechanically and mostly optically Leica is unbeatable compared with Nikkor.

3. Focus throw is lager with Leica and is always in a way of FF direction for cine lenses.

Hey Sanjin,

Will you someday do tests with Leica M lenses ?

Kind Regards,

Rami

Rami,

I do have Summicron-M 90mm and test is coming up.

BTW, Voightleander Nokton 35mm f/1.2 was with Leica M mount.

Also I will borrow some more M lenses for additional tests.

jnewm,

you are right.

I was pretty rushing to get some shots.

Interesting.

Nils J. Nesse,

Sorry I was a joke.

I am always rushing, do not have assistant, making mistakes and in a public places is not so easy.

All right Sanjin, it 's certainly easy to make mistakes like that when you're shooting alone.

BTW, I was in Vienna a couple of months ago. Weather was crap, but I had a fantastic lunch at Zum Schwarzen Kameel.

Sanjin,

I agree Leica Primes often (almost ...always) win over Nikon Primes.
But it seems Nikon zooms are from a newer technology than their primes, they look better than their primes to my eyes.

Nikon strength is zoom.

Now, i am always curious to compare Leicas to Canon FD ( more pleasant optics and built quality than EF to my eyes) at the very same aperture.
...let's say Leica and Canon FD both at f4.

thanks again for all the work.

Antoine,

Nikkor is now almost zoom lens brand only.

BTW, the best zoom are not Nikkor's niether Canon's as the most people think.

It's about a hype only.

Olympus are the best zooms but there are 4/3 only.

Maybe scarlet could benefit from those lenses.

Nils J. Nesse,

Zum Schwarzen Kameel one of top in Viennese local places to eat and also to have some fun with "Wieners".

BTW of discussion Leica vs. Nikkor I will post now a short 2K video sample,

the first shot is Leica Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8 and the second is Nikkor zoom 17-35mm f/2.8 AF-ED.

The second shot is done later then the first, so a lighting conditions are a bit different.

Both are shot at f/5.6 and processed at 400 ASA in RED Alert.
