We recently got a hold of a Red camera at our office in Grand Rapids, Michigan and started doing some test shooting. While reviewing the footage we came across some weird vertical lines in the footage. They are highlighted well in the following stills:

Has anyone seen this problem before?

Send this one to support please.

I had this problem and it was a little bugger but for the most part, I think it has been fixed by RED (who by the way were very diligent and proactive in trying to solve the problem). It would pop up randomly and in the worst of times during different shoots :(

NormLi,

Thanks for your reply. So this has been a re-occurring issue for you? Was this something that was embedded in the footage or was there a way to work around it? Did you have to send your camera in to get repaired or was it firmware related?

Graeme and Sean,
I called Red Support and talked with Travis but have not heard back from him yet. I just thought I would post this in the mean time while I waited to see if others had experienced similar problems. Thanks for your help!

SBrookens,

This was a re-occuring problem that happened quite often but no other users seemed to have the same problem until now (you). It was embedded into the footage and there is no workaround. On set, we had to just either wait for it to go away (even after rebooting, updating firmware, black shading, etc on set), and then shoot. But sometimes it would pop back up again and would be very difficult to get rid of, even after turning the camera off and on again many times. It's not firmware related I think. I had this problem from build 15-16.

Had to send it into RED a few times for them to try fixing it and I think so far it has been fixed but I still need to do extensive testing on it in different conditions to make sure it doesn't pop up again as it's very embarrassing on set and has ruined a lot of shots for my clients (and wasted time). I had to refund portions (or all in worst scenario) of their rental fee to alleviate their disappointment a bit but this has happened on about 4-5 shoots now in the worst times.

RED will take care of you. Travis is my contact and provided excellent support.

Thanks,

Norm

I also noticed this anomaly on the LCD monitor during quick pans. However, the owner acknowledged then, dismissed it as, he said, "...it's happened before...and hasn't shown up in the transfer, yet." I believe he addressed the problem to the company. I haven't received any news regarding it since. I plan to shoot a short film with it, hopefully, in the near future.
