Unable to render files to QT using DV / DNXHD Codec in Red Alert 3.5.0?

DV codecs are not even showing.

Missing something?

DV? DV??? Imagine the wicked witch of the west, melting away under the bucket of water Dorthy splashes on her... You would condem your RED footage to this same fate by rendering it to DV inside RedAlert and RedCine? In fact, I think if you could do this, the audio should be replaced with the wretched whining of "I'm melting!... I'm melting!...." :gun:

Actually, I render to DV all the time. It's very useful, practical, and cost effective for a quick offline. The quicker I get into edit, the quicker I'm out of it and up-ressing to whatever I need.

Hmmm...
Ever heard of "offline" editing ?:)

So yes, I would really like to see the DV codec back in RA / RR / Redcine.
It's extremely usefull in a lot of situations :
- Downconverting hours of footage is much much faster to DV than to HD, you could easily do it overnight.
- Takes less space than HD files
- Compatible with most of the editing systems, even the older / slower / cheaper ones.

And yes, of course, when you're finished editing, you conform to whatever you want...

In the pre-build 16 RA / Redcine, the DV codec worked fine. Please please bring it back.

For now, the only way I've found is converting to SD Prores in RR, then doing a batch conversion in MPEG Streamclip to DV. Quite fast, but you lose TC, and it's an additional step that could/should be avoided.

Nils.

There was a DV codec in pre-build 16 RA/RC/RR/RL? I don't recall such a thing, but I didn't spend much time with the RED tools pre-build 16.

I hear what you guys are saying, but there are better codecs available for offline work, w/ better compression, fewer artifacts, better performance, and wider color gamuts...

Having said that, I'm all for having the ability to render your footage to *any* available/installed codecs on the system. If RA will render to ProRes SD via Quicktime, then you should also be able to render to DV, MJPEG, etc, etc. also via Quicktime. Even if I don't think its a hot idea to render to DV doesn't mean you shouldn't have the option.

RedCine had the DV codec for sure a few versions ago, I'm not 100% sure about RedAlert.

I agree, there are now much better codecs than DV, but frankly I don't think the DV artifacts would be annoying to anyone when doing offline editing. Hey, do you remember AVR3 ? :)
And when using Avid, you are able to fast import DV footage without a transcode. Plus, remember, DNxHD doesn't work yet with RC/RA...

You could window burn the timecode when making the prores files and adjust the timecode when it goes into final cut so your timecode matches the original clips. (Go to modify/timecode in the dropdown menus at the top) hum bug, but would work for now. I can't stand offlining with incorrect timecode so I feel your pain. (p.s you could skip the burn in part and just import the proxies, sort by name and use them to tell you what the correct timecode is for each clip, then delete them. Always have options ;)

I use Compresser to transcode the M proxies to DV all the time. It works well, and everyone has been very happy with the Offlines.

Yes, that's what I first wanted to do, but at least with 2K files, I randomly get a white picture instead of the footage on some clips...
Am I the only one to get that ? Latest codec, Leopard 10.4.5, latest QT...
