Hi all. . .

We used our new EVF on set for the very first time today and BANG. . . what a disaster! First we were amazed at how nice the image looked. Then we turned the monitor on "black and white" for focus assisting and guess what? THE IMAGE IS NOW BLACK AND WHITE ON THE CARDS!!!!! There is no color information on the proxies at all! What is up with that!?!?!!?!

Is there ANY way to get this color information back? Or do we have to reshoot? My actor is leaving in TWO days and this was a very important scene.

Please advise.

Stephen

What does the R3D look like if you open it up in RedAlert?

We don't use REDAlert. . . only the 2K proxies. . .

:-(

What a complete disaster. . . and to think that I actually liked this EVF. Anyone want a brand new EVF???

Stephen

We NEVER touched the camera settings at all. . . only pushed the little buttons on the side of the EVF. Amazing. What a disaster. That should NEVER occur!

Stephen

Jeez. I hope you find a solution for this!

Maybe Jarred could set up a "HELP!...." forum for really rush emergency tech questions about Red and related technology. I know that sometimes people really need help right away on a set or location.

You can always generate new proxies in Red Alert, that way you can tweak any settings except for the curves and generate new 2k proxies in seconds.

Okay, here's the latest. I opened an R3D file and looked at it. The color saturation was shown as ZERO. So, the color IS there, but it ISN'T THERE IN THE PROXIES. Since our workflow ONLY uses the proxies, is there a way to regenerate the 2K proxies using REDAlert or some other program?

The real question now is, WHY WOULD ANYTHING YOU DO TO THE MONITOR AFFECT THE RECORDED IMAGE?????? How stupid is that?

Stephen

It's not possible to record a Red image without color. It's a raw bayer pattern.

It's likely their is a small bug, setting a value in the recorded metadata in the firmware. Not to worry they will fix it.

You will need to regenerate your proxies after you reset the saturation in RedAlert.

Okay, thanks to all who answered my emergency plea. The color is there. But what a STUPID bug! The monitor is a monitor. . . period. It should NEVER affect the recorded image, but it did in this case. Thankfully, I'll apparently be able to regenerate the proxies and hand them off to my editor.

Geez. I'm 51 years old. I'm near the end of a three month shoot on this film. I've been working on the film for two years. My actor leaves in two days.

My heart can't take this kind of excitement.

the button pushing never effects the recorded image!!!! Learn your
camera and stop freaking out!!!!

Go make new proxy files in red alert. You have no problems, calm down.

But it DID affect the proxies. . . and that is a major headache for us. We edit straight from the proxies and never use REDAlert. Actually, everyone who has seen our footage wonders why anyone would ever use anything except the proxies! This just adds an unnecessary step in our workflow for this scene.

Geez.

Stephen

The proxies are "not the recorded image".

We are here to help. We just need to find out what setting caused the proxies to desaturate.

Its not a bug.. what you are doing is setting the metadata to zero saturation, which the proxies get made with. This is important, because a DP may want to set no color, or extra color, or purple or pink, and translate that to the editor.... so the editor can see exactly what the DP sees. Thank god for RAW though, as the Editor may think the DP was nuts and restore the image back to "normal"

You can reset the metadata in the software tools by clicking on the "reset" buttons... or go back to the metadata by clicking the "metadata" buttons. And make new proxies in Red Alert.

And dont feel bad... when saturation control became a feature back in the day, and i opened up the proxies after turning it off, I had the same panic attack :)

My bad, I thought he meant he was using the black and white false color mode...

Steven the proxies have a kind built in color correction filter that mimics the color correction set in the camera. In both places, the camera and the quicktime proxy, the image is being adjusted just before you view it but the raw image itself always records the maximum amount and the original data from the sensor, so the changes you make can never actually effect the image, only your lense, shutter, framerate and of course lighting and composition affect the actual image. (Plus compression quality and resolution if you want to get all techy.)

There is a great feature under Video->ViewFinder->Color(turn the nob) that lets you view the image in black and white without affecting the image correction settings (aka metadata). I use it quite a bit and highly reccomend it.
