Hi Red Users,

Let me me first say that I have never cut or worked with Red footage. I'm very new to this workflow, so be gentle! I am a pro editor though with 10 years experience, so I speak the language.

I have an upcoming shoot and I'm just curious to see if anyone has any experience with this.

Let's say that you ingested and logged all of your footage on an intel mac. Once the footage was converted to Pro-res, couldn't you just bring those files over to G5 based Mac with FCP 6.0.4 and cut from there? Is the Red codec you have to install for an intel based mac only?

Thanks for any words of wisdom!

Once RED files are converted to Pro-res, you can edit on any non-intel machine and do not need the RED codec anymore (intel only)
Good work !

Yep.

I had my G5 Quad for sale, but seeing how I finish and edit most of my RED projects in ProRes and / or via DPX sequences, I kept the G5 do a lot of my editing on it, use the Mac Pro for rendering, transcoding and other tasks.

I'm actually doing such a thing for a client. We shot a short on my RED. I transcoded the footage to apple's AIC codec and put it on the guy's G-RAID for him to edit on his G5. Once he's done he will send my the Final Cut project and I will relink it to the same AIC files on my hard drive. From there I will XML out through Crimson for the conform to 1080P--which we will color correct in Color. Not a bad little workflow.

Playback Errors?

Playback Errors?

I am working on an indie feature shot at 4K 2:1 with a similar workflow - transcoding using L&T on an Intel Quad to ProRes HQ so that my editor can work on her G5 quad. Unfortunately we are experiencing playback problems (dropped frames, audio missing) that don't exist when playing back on the Intel machine. Unlimited RT is turned off - what am I missing?
