I'm using L&T to transcode r3d into prores for the edit then into crimson. My question pertains to clip renaming. is there any point in the workflow process I'm able to rename clips? or do I have to work with the generated r3d file names throughout?

I'm not certain, but i think you have to keep the names the same. Though again, I can't say this 100%.

Never rename the files on your storage hard drive unless you want to enter a world of EDL pain.
Feel free to rename in FCP once they're imported. ANy EDL from fcp will reference the underlying source file name.

If you had renamed (maybe added some special words), you would have to manually match the clips in Crimson. If the added word is identical (like postfix) that word can be added in the Crimson for matching clips.

Renaming is OK as far as the L&T plugin goes AS LONG AS YOU MAINTAIN
THE SEQUENCE NUMBER SUFFIX and are CONSISTENT WITH
THE NAME PREFIX ON EACH FILE.

e.g.
A001_C001_071119_001.R3D -> MyOscarWinner_001.R3D
A001_C001_071119_002.R3D -> MyOscarWinner_002.R3D
is fine.

A001_C001_071119_001.R3D -> MyOscarWinnerA.R3D
A001_C001_071119_002.R3D -> MyOscarWinnerB.R3D
is not good (loss of sequence suffix)

A001_C001_071119_001.R3D -> MyOscarWinnerPart1_001.R3D
A001_C001_071119_002.R3D -> MyOscarWinnerPart2_002.R3D
is not good (non-matching name prefix)

I believe this is true even if the clip is in one file...you still need
the _001 suffix.

Anything that accesses the R3D files directly needs to maintain
the basic naming convention. Once you've transcoded to self contained
quicktimes and the R3D are taken out of the equation you can obviously
do as you like, but I think protocol would be to use the Logging features
to change the Reel name, etc. rather than mess with the file names.
