What resolution charts would you use?
What are the key resolution tests to perform if buying/hiring?
Help.....Dave,

A true test would be done on a collimator and a projector.
There are too many variables to test on a camera.
Indeed, a test should be performed on the prospective camera, but this should be the last step (in my opinion).

Im sure there are many others that will chime in on this subject.

Lens Testing

For a complete lens test the following would be performed at major rental houses. MTF test on axis (if a problem is noticed you may go on to test at five points off axis & centrally) , projection here you would check for distortion, color fringing and distance scales, T stop machine to verify stops are correctly marked up. collumation on camera, eye focus on camera (both after checking focal depth of camera as part of the camera check)
So in short we would check the camera independently, check the lenses independently, then check the lenses on camera. In shooting lens tests simply shooting charts is not enough we would shoot interiors and exteriors generally using the same external surfaces (brickwork, vertical or horizontal lines etc)
We also check lenses at extreme tempretures this is where quite often the differences between stills & cinematography lenses really shows up. Equally stills lenses are often harder to correct if a fault is found than professional cinematography lenses. The guys that test these lenses have been doing so for many years and get to know what is or is not acceptable without compromise because they are not owner / operators and are seeking optimum performance.
